      MRS. FRED SCHOWALTER

Mrs. Pauline Leisy Schowalter, daughter of Rudolph and Lizzie Hargesheimer Leisy, was born in Keokuk, Iowa on July 15, 1875. In 1881, with her parents and rest of the family, she moved to Wisner, Neb. where she spent her early youth and received her elementary education.

On Nov. 13, 1892, she was baptized upon the confession of her faith by Rev. Christian Schowalter and received into the membership of the Salem Mennonite Church of Wisner, Neb. After her marriage she transferred her membership to the First Mennonite Church of Halstead, Kansas where she remained a faithful member until the time of her death.

On Oct. 10, 1900, she was united in marriage to Frederick Wilhelm Schowalter of Halstead, Kansas by Rev. Christian Kaufman. The couple came to Kansas and made their home on a farm near Halstead. They made farming their occupation and lived on farms near Halstead until 1950 when they retired and moved into town.

To this union three sons and three daughters were born. Mrs. Schowalter was always a patient, loving and devoted mother to her children, and a kind and helpful friend to everyone.

She passed away in her home on June 14, 1959, after a lingering illness which for a time confined her to the hospital. For the last few weeks she was completely confined to bed. She bore her suffering patiently and frequently requested that someone read to her from the Bible. She attained the age of 83 years and 11 months.

She was preceded in death by two children, Edith and Henry, and by three brothers and three sisters. She leaves to mourn her denature her devoted husband; four children Dora, Mrs. P. M. Goertz of San Marino, Calif., Mildred and husband Robert DeWitt of Alden, Kansas. William and wife Betty of Halstead, Frederick and wife Yvonne of Colorado Springs; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. John Stauffer of Page, Neb., Mrs. Dora Haury of Halstead, and Mrs. Alfred Wedel of Aberdeen, Idaho; two brothers, Albert Leisy and wife of Aberdeen, Idaho, and August Leisy and wife of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning, June 18, at 9 a.m. in the First Mennonite Church of Halstead. Rev. Roland Goering, the pastor, officiated. Burial was made in the Halstead Cemetery.
