Greenlee, William

Notes:

William Greenlee received a common school education, and for some
years was manager of the Kanawha Salt Works, near Charleston, WV. In
1852 he removed to Madison County, IN., and purchased a tract of land
near Forestville. The county at that time was sparsely settled, the
nearest trading post being twenty miles away, and a journey to the
mill sometimes occupied several days. Being of ingenious turn of mind,
he made the shoes for his own family and did cobble work for the
neighbors during spare hours. Mrs. Greenlee learned spinning and
weaving and supplied the family with clothing, blankets, etc. IN 1897
he moved to a comfortable home in Summitville to live a retired life.
In politics he was a Republican. Although a member of no church, he
was a man of sterling worth, and upright and honorable and a highly
respected and esteemed citizen.

William married Sayre, Harriet on 15 Apr 1841 in Meigs Co., Ohio, USA. Harriet (daughter of Sayre, John and Jones, Hannah) was born on 24 Jun 1822 in Pomeroy, Meigs Co., OH; died on 12 Jan 1918; was buried in Madison Co., Indiana, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

William married Musselman, Susan in 1808 in Kanawha Co., WV. Susan (daughter of Musselman, John) was born on 15 Jan 1775 in Shenandoah Valley, WV; died on 4 Jun 1873 in Summitville, Madison Co., IN. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Edward was probably a brother of William Greenlee of West Virginia, He
came from Ireland sometime after 1771 as his son, William, was born
that year in Ireland. He, with his family, apparently came to join his
brother, William, who had been living in Botetourt County Virginia,
since 1766. The two brothers, with their families, moved to what is
now Mason County, West Virginia, about 1800. Edward Greenlee was a
farmer and a Baptist.
