    OSKALOOSA — Valera Zula Hervey Koonts, age 89, passed away Feb. 8, 2007, at Pleasant Park in Oskaloosa. Prior to the nursing home, she lived for six years with her son Kenneth and his family in Ottumwa.

    Valera was born Sept. 25, 1917 at Keosauqua to John W. and Grace Della (Sell) Hervey.

    She graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1935 and began her teaching career in 1936. She attended several colleges and spent most of her life as a teacher in Van Buren County. She was administrative assistant in the county Superintendent Office for several years and was secretary to the Keosauqua school superintendents. She also had been an insurance agent. She taught at the Van Buren County Care Facility and worked with refugees and other adults for eight years before retiring for good in 1984. She was a member of Keosauqua Methodist Church. She was an active member and officer of Mothers
    Club, B.P.W., Delta Kappa Gamma (Alpha Chapter), several teachers organizations and ladies circles.

    She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and teacher.

    She is preceded in death by her husbands, James L. McLeland in 1966, Guy Mumford in 1979 and Retson Koonts in 1996; her parents; brothers, Willard and Robert; sisters, Gladys Beggs, Florence Mellen, Verda Duke and infant sister, Lucille.

    Survivors include her children; daughter, Shirley Hicks of Council Bluffs, James H. McLeland and wife, Pat of Freeport, Ill., Vern Lee McLeland and wife, Debbie of Golden, Colo., Kenneth Paul McLeland and wife, Deb of Ottumwa and Jerry Dean McLeland and fiancee, Tammy Kummet of Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren, Tony and Molly McLeland, Curtis and Kim McLeland, Traci Lynn and Joseph Perry II, Ashley McLeland, Janna and John DeVylder, Alex McLeland, and Kersten McLeland; great-grandsons, Jordan and Jared McLeland, Nicholas McLeland, Joseph III and Emily Perry, Gustav and Elias DeVylder; sister, Wanda Akey Kirkland; nieces and nephews; relatives; and former students and friends.

    Valera was always proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always there for them. She often helped those in need. She delighted in working with students of all ages. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

    Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with the family present from 3-5 p.m.

    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12 at the funeral chapel. Rev. ellis andrews and Rev. Bryon Wixom will
    officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at Cantril, followed by luncheon at Keosauqua Methodist Church.

    Memorials to Heartland Humane Society, Ottumwa or to Keosauqua Public Library for children's books may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 717 Foster Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.
