    Dorothy Rebecca Stuemky
    NEWKIRK -- Dorothy Rebecca Stuemky, longtime Newkirk resident, died early Saturday morning, Sept. 18, 2004, at her home. She was 88.

    The daughter of Howard Hubbard and Pearl Blanche McMahan Smith, she was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Apache. She grew up and received her early education at Apache and graduated from high school there. She then attended Cameron College in Lawton and then Weatherford College, receiving a two-year Oklahoma teaching certificate.

    On April 2, 1938, she and John Robert Stuemky were married at Apache by his father, the Rev. William R. Stuemky. They established their first home in Apache, moving in July of that year to Newkirk. They opened the Otasco store and operated it for 41 years.

    While her children were growing up, she was active in the PTA, Cub Scouts, Blue Birds and Camp Fire. Mr. Stuemky died Jan. 8, 1985.

    Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She sang in the Chancel Choir for 61 years and had taught various Sunday school classes. An active member of the United Methodist Women, she served as president for two terms. She belonged to the Susannah and Naomi circles of the church. She was also a member of the Red Rose Garden Club and the Newkirk and Historical Society.

    She loved her family, her church and her friends. She enjoyed Bible study groups in which she participated. A member of Friends of the Library, she was an avid reader and was once selected Library Person of the Year. Dorothy wrote many poems over the years. She enjoyed music and riding her bicycle. She also enjoyed traveling to many different countries, some of which were Canada, Mexico, Europe, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Russia and Israel. She was able to achieve her dream of seeing the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany, in 2000.

    She is survived by three sons, Dr. John H. Stuemky of Oklahoma City, Robert S. and Myra Stuemky of Newkirk and James M. and Laura Stuemky of Del Norte, Colo.; one sister, Mary Jane Davis of Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Stefani Stuemky of Norman, Cindy Koch and her husband Tim of Newkirk, Brian Stuemky of Moore, Thomas Stuemky and Alison Stuemky, both of Del Norte, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Dalton Koch of Newkirk. She is also survived by nephews, nieces and many lifelong friends.

    Her teachings and wisdom will be missed by all.

    In addition to her husband John, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Catherine Ann Stuemky; her parents; and two brothers, Jack Smith and Vernon Smith.

    The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk with the Rev. James C. Hollifield officiating. Burial will follow in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.

    The body will lie in state at the funeral home until 9 p.m. Thursday and until noon Friday. The casket will not be opened at the church.

    Sons and grandsons serving as casket bearers will be John Stuemky, Robert Stuemky, James Stuemky, Brian Stuemky and Thomas Stuemky.

    Memorial funds have been established with the Chancel Choir of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Stuemky's memory through Eastman National Bank, P.O. Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468.

    Dorothy Rebecca Stuemky, 88, longtime Newkirk resident, died early Saturday morning, Sept. 18, 2004 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk with the Rev. James C. Hollifield officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the funeral home until 9 p.m. Thursday and until noon on Friday. The casket will not be opened at the church.
