    THE HARVEY BOOK

    (57) JOHN HARVEY5 (John,4 Thomas,3 Thomas,2 Thomas1). He was born about 1716 at Taunton. Residing there in 1735, and designated as "Lieutenant," he became one of the original proprietors of "Township No. 1," or New Taunton. [See page 45 ante.] In 1736 he was actively engaged in laying out and "lotting" the new township; and in 1739 and again in 1740 and '41 he was elected Treasurer of the company of proprietors. At a meeting of the proprietors held at Taunton in December, 1740, an "allowance of "10 is granted to Lieut. John Harvey for work done towards improving his lot in 1739." In the Autumn of 1741 he acted as moderator of a meeting of the proprietors, and was appointed one of a committee to survey the township lands.

    In April, 1779, being then "Captain," he was, with six other citizens of Taunton, "chosen a committee to hire for sd. town as reesonably as may be, the men for the Continental or State Service that the Town or Several Captins or Commanders of Companies, Shall be called upon to Raise for ye futer."

    The history of Swanzey, New Hampshire, from 1734 to 1890 (1892), Benjamin read, Salem Mass., 1892:
    page 75-76:

    At the annual meeting this year the following was passed : "Whereas Mr. John Harvey and others, inhabitants of Swanzey, have requested said town that they would vote that they and their lands may be annexed to the town of Marlborough, representing that they live much more convenient to Marlborough meeting-house than to Swanzey, etc., the town having considered the said request, think the same to be reasonable ; therefore voted that Messrs. John Harvey, Kimber Har-
    ve}^ and Samuel Stearns, and the land whereon they dAvell, and the land belonging to Mr. Timothy Harvey be set off from the town of Swanzey and annexed to the town of Marlborough ; said tract of land lies in the northeastwardly part of said Swanzey, and is the most northwardly part of that gore of land which was set off from Richmond to Swanzey ; and is bounded as follows : viz. : Beginning at a heap of stones, being the southeast corner of the town of Keene, then runs on said Keene west 8 degrees north, 32 rods to the old corner of Swanzey ; then runs south 34 degrees west on Swanzey's old line, 418
    rods to a white pine tree ; then runs east 20 degrees 30 minutes south on common land 2 1 2 rods to a stake and stones in the patent line ; then runs on the patent line north 9 degrees 30 minutes east 418 rods to the first mentioned corner ; containing tliree hundred and five acres." This vote Avas sanctioned the same year by the legislature.

    LIEUT. NATHANIEL BRIGGS (William, William, John) was born in Taunton in 1698; he died there 14 Aug. 1773, aged 75 years.

    He married in Wrentham 16 June 1720, JUDITH GUILD (Vital Records of Wrentham, Mass., vol. 2, p. 310), daughter of John and Sarah (Fisher) Guild, born in Wrentham 19 Sept. 1697 (ibid., vol. 1, p. 105), died in Taunton, 22 Nov 1774, aged 77 years (g.s.). She was buried in Oakland Cemetery.

    The following deeds in the Registry of Deeds in Taunton give genealogical information:

    Nathaniel Briggs of Taunton granted to Seth Briggs of Taunton, 1/2 privilege right in Taunton for £14:10s; wit. William Ware and John Fisher, ack. same day; recorded 8 July 1735 (Briston County Deeds, 23:414).

    " Sary" Lane of Wrentham (husband not named) granted to her brother Nathaniel Briggs of Taunton "all interest in estate of my father, William Briggs, dec'd", for £200, 4 May 1732; ack. 6 June 1733; recorded 25 Dec. 173 (ibid., 21:516).

    Eliphalet and "Agnis" Briggs (sister) of Taunton granted to their brother Nathaniel Briggs of Taunton "our portion of the estate of our father, William Briggs, dec'd.". for £417, 1 Sept. 1733; wit. James Briggs and William Cobb; ack. 4 Jan. 1733/4; recorded 8 Jan. 1733/4 (ibid., 523).

    Nathaniel Briggs of Taunton granted to his brother Eilphalet Briggs of Taunton a "tract that was our father's, William Briggs, dec'd.." for #400, 25 Dec. 1733; wit. James Briggs and Agnis Briggs; ack. 1733; recorded 1743 (ibid., 32:142).

    Nathaniel Briggs of Taunton granted to his son, Nathaniel Briggs, Jr., of Taunton in 1768; wit. Nathaniel Briggs, 2nd (ibid., 51:236).

    Nathaniel Briggs of Taunton granted to his son, Nathaniel Briggs, Jr., of Taunton "32 acres from my farm:, bounded by John Briggs, for #200, 5 June 1773 (ibid., 55:257).

    In the Military Records of Massachusetts there are several entries for Nathaniel Briggs showing service in the French and Indian War" -- (1) "Centinel, Jule 10 -- Oct. 2 [1754] to the East", allowance for 4 days travel (Massachusetts Archives Volume 93, p. 141); (2) Nathaniel Briggs request for billeting "North Hampton" May 331, 1758 (ibid., 96, p. 142); (3) Service under Capt. Dunbar, Jan 1-Dec. 18, 1760 to Nova Scotia (ibid., 98, p. 462).

    The will of Nathaniel Briggs was drawn in Taunton 9 June 1773 and probated 30 Aug. 1773. His son Nathaniel was named executor. It was witnessed by Abijah Lincoln, Job Stacy and Philip Mason. The beneficiaries were his wife "Judah"; his sons Nathaniel, William, and John; his daughters, Mercy Briggs, Mehitable Wetherell, Jemima Harvey, Margaret Willis, and "Judah" Finney (Bristol County Probates, 22:483).
