    Donovan Schowalter

Donovan Schowalter of Cucamonga died peacefully in his sleep at home on the morning of August 14, 2004. He was 88 years old. Don was born in 1916 in the original San Antonio Hospital in Upland, California. Except for a short time in his youth, he lived his entire life here in the Upland/Cucamonga area. Don graduated from Chaffey High School in 1935 and attended UCLA (Go Bruins!) in the School of Agricultural, where he also ran track. After a short stint of logging in the High Sierras, Don aided the World War II effort as a machinist for military aircraft parts. He then began his lifetime love of ranching, where he and his father were pioneers in the citrus industry. His other lifetime love, Dorothy, was at his side when he passed. Together, they raised four children, Kathy, Stan, Donna, and Paul. Don was also an accompl ished wood and metal worker, and pen and ink artist. In addition to those talents, he was probably best known for his sense of humor. His never-ending flow of jokes, stories, and puns provided entertainment for generations. Memorial services will be held at First Mennonite Church, 379 N. Campus Avenue, Upland, California 91786 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception immediately following at the church. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony. Donations may be made to the First Mennonite Church of Upland.

    IRENE M. SCHOWALTER

Irene M. Schowalter, nee Eymann, was born on Dec. 20, 1884 in Donnellson, Iowa, and passed away in her home in Cucamonga, Calif. on Dec. 12, 1959, reaching the age of 74 years less one week.

From Iowa she with the family came to Reedley, Calif. where they resided one year before establishing a home at Upland in 1904. On Dec. 11, 1913, she was married to Paul F. Schowalter, also of Upland. Her husband, a citrus grower, established a home for them in the Upland-Cucamonga area.

In later years both developed a heart condition which forced them into complete retirement. They built a comfortable home on their acreage on Baker Ave., Cucamonga, but had enjoyed it only a year when her husband suddenly succumbed to a heart seizure. Since she could not live alone her son Donovan with his family moved in with her. For two years she lived happily in this family circle.

Through all the years she was a consecrated member of the First Mennonite church of Upland, sparing no time or effort in her services. For a number of years she was teacher in the Primary department, a member of the Serving Others circle and of the choir. Her rich alto voice was silenced only when her heart condition made it necessary. She still was a member of the church's housekeeping committee and spent the last day of her life inspecting choir robes and getting them heady [sic] for Sunday's service.

In the stillness of the night, she heard her Master's call and answered it. Not until morning did her family know that life had departed.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Biel of Mar Vista; a son, Donovan Schowalter of Cucamonga; four sisters, Mrs. A. J. Ruth and Mrs. L. L. Harms, both of Upland, Mrs. Harry Ledig of Alta Loma, and Mrs. Willard Goerz of Sommerset; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted in the church by her pastor, Rev. Paul Goering, followed by interment in Bellevue cemetery.

Informaiton provided via Post-em on Worldconnect:
    H. A. Eymann was a merchant, and in the lumber business. In 1887 was one of the founders of the community of Moundridge, Kansas. He came to CA after the turn of the century and started the Bungalowcraft Company in 1908. A man named Henry L. Menken was the architect/designed who produced the residential building designs this Bungalowcraft reproduced in a series of architectural plan books. Menken took over Bungalowcraft after Eymann died in 1911. Menken died in 1916, to be followed by Rex D. Weston, who ran the company until the 1950s. The first Bungalowcraft book was printed in 1908 and the last one in the early 1950s.

Bungalowcraft designs are common throughout southern California, and most likely in other part of the Country.

Eymann appears to be the money behind Bungalowcraft's founding - since he was apparently not an architect or designed - the fact that he was a lumber merchant is interesting - there is no indication that Bungalowcraft served as a contractor and actually
    built houses.

Hermann married Rauscher, Anna Maria on 23 Jan 1876. Anna was born on 3 Apr 1853 in Franklin, Iowa, USA; died on 23 Feb 1933 in Upland, San Bernardino, California, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
