    Lial Humphrey
    MILTON - Lial Humphrey, 76, of Milton died Aug. 25. 1985. at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

    He was born Feb. 25, 1909, in Davis County to A.K. and Maudie Wimp Humphrey. He was a retired carpenter and lived in Milton most of his life. A veteran of World War
    II, he was a member of American Legion Post 483 in Milton and the Milton Fire Department. He married Florence Baldwin on Nov. 22, 1928, in Greeley, Colo.

    He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Shirley Baxter of Fort Madison, Joanne Evans of Burlington, Susan Nelson of East Moline, Ill., and Sandra Hainline of Bonaparte; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

    The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Milton United Methodist
    Church, the Revs. Charles, and Marilyn Butler officiating. Burial with
    graveside military rites will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton.

    The casket will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday and
    closed at the beginning of the service.

    A memorial has been established.

    ALVA K. HUMPHREY

    Alva K. Humphrey one of six children of William and Nancy Humphrey ws born July 24,1888 in Scotland Co.,Missouri and passed away inthe Ottumwa hospital April 26th, 1946 at the age of 57 years, 4 months, and 2 days.

    On December 8th 1907 he was united in marriage to Maudie Wimp and to this union was born one child Lial. He leaves his wife, Maude and son, Lile, 2 grandchildren, 4 brothers, Bess of Milton, Orin of stiles, W.C. of Bloomfield, Charley of west Grove, and a sister, Mintie Ellis of Hutchinson,Kansas. and a host of friends to mourn his loss.

    Mr. Humphrey has been in poor health for a number of years, but had been working at the Barker Company in Bloomfield until a few days previous to his death.He had contracted double pneumonia and was taken to the hospital in Ottumwa Friday afternoon and passed away some hours later

    Funeral services were held at the Milton Methodist church in charge of Rev. J.C. Behrens, Monday afternoon, with interment in the Sunnyside cemetery.

    Mrs Humphrey's Funeral Is Set
    Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Milton Methodist Church for Mrs. Maudie J. Humphrey, 75, who died Monday at the Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua.
    The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Eis. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cememtery in Milton. The body will be taken from the Wagler Fundral Home to the church at noon Thursday.

    She was born in Davis County to Samuel and Sarah McGrew Wimp on Feb. 14 1890. She married Alva K. Humphrey in 1907. He preceded her in 1946.
    Mrs. Humphrey was a member of the Stiles Methodist church and of the American Legion Auxiliary at Milton.
    Survivors include one son, Lial of Milton;one brother, Ernest wimp of Bloomfield; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

    William Montgomery Humphrey was born in Scotland county, Missouri, May 30, 1852, and died at his home in Milton, March 24, 1917, at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 23 days. January 1, 1872, he was united in marriage to Nancy Whittson. To this union was born six children, five boys and one girl, all of whom are living. Bess of Milton, Mintie [sic] Ellis of Hutchinson, Kans., Orian, Millie C, Alvie K and Charley H. all of Bloomfield, Iowa. He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, six children, twelve grandchildren, and one great grandchild, two brothers and three sisters. He joined the Presbyterian church about thirty-six years ago. In 1901 he moved to Davis county, Iowa, and united with the Methodist church at Pulaski. Four years ago he moved to Milton, where he resided until the time of his death.

    Funeral services were held at the M.E. church on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Hankins, and interment was made in Sunnyside cemetery.

    MRS. WILLIAM HUMPHREY

    Nancy J. Whittson was born in Scotland county, Missouri, October 28, 1853, and died at the home of her son A.K. Humphrey near Milton, Iowa, March 8, 1919, at the age of 66 years, 4 months and 10 days. January, 1872, she was united in marriage to William Humphrey, who preceeded her in death two years ago. To this union was born six children, five boys and one girl, all of whom are living. Bess and A.K. of Milton, Montie of Hutchinson, Kansas, Orian of Belknap, Will and Charley of Bloomfield. She leaves to mourn her loss, six children, twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, Susie Ellis of Ottumwa. She united with the Methodist church at Pulaski, Iowa, some years ago and was a faithful member and always attended church until her health failed some years since. She has been confined to her bed a great part of the time. A good woman has gone to her reward.

    Services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. A.M. Smtih,. Text, “I go to prepare a place for you.” Interment was made in the Sunnyside Cemetery.

    John K. Humphrey, a well-known and enterprising farmer and stock dealer of Mount Pleasant Township, was born in Washington County, Ky., October 22, 1826, and is the son of William and Elisa Ann Pettitt Humphreys, The father was a native of Washington County. Ky., Decmeber 14, 1802 and died in Knox County Mo. August 8, 1884. The Humphrey family is of of English descent. The father, with his family, left Kentucky and came to Lewis County, Mo., about 1811, and from there to Scotland County, about 1830, where he remained until after the war. He then moved to Knox County, Mo., where he passed the remainder of his days. He was a farmer, and served as constable for several years.

    The mother of our subject was a native of Faquier County, Va., born December 28, 1800, and was of German descent. She was a member of the Baptist Church, and died in Scotland County, Mo., May 21, 1886. Our subject is the eldest of ten children, five now living. He received the rudiments of an education in Kentucky, and attended school a short time after coming to Missouri. He remained with his parents until 1848 when he married Rachel Davis, a daughter of R. M. Davis. She was born in Mercer County, Ky., May 14, 1830, was a member of the Christian Chnrch, and died in Scotland County, Mo., October 4. 1874. To this union were born five sons and eight daughters; four sons and three daughters now living. After marriage our subject rented land for two years, after which he purchased land in Knox County, where he lived six years. He then purchased the land that he now owns: and moved on the same. In 1854 he was living in Scotland County, and was elected magistrate, which position he held for twenty years. He is a worthy member of the Christian Church, and was formerly a member of the I. O. O. F., when living in the vicinity of a lodge. He is a Democrat, and a man much respected by all his acquaiutances. He never sued, and was never sued, and has never been a witness before a jury except once, and that was before the grand jury.

In 1854 he was living in Scotland County, and was elected magistrate, which position he held for twenty years. He is a worthy member of the Christian Church, and was formerly a member of the I. O. O. F., when living in the vicinity of a lodge. He is a Democrat, and a man much respected by all his acquaiutances. He never sued, and was never sued, and has never been a witness before a jury except once, and that was before the grand jury.
