Debra Ann Walters

DAVENPORT : Debra Ann Walters, 54, of Davenport, Iowa, died on Monday, September 22, 2008, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa, where she received kind and loving care. While at Trinity Medical Center in Bettendorf and during her subsequent stay at the hospice, Debra was comforted by her many friends and family members.

Services for Debra will be private, and the family requests that no flowers be sent. Cremation rites will be performed in conformity with her Catholic faith. Memorials may be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Debra was born on July 31, 1954, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Don and Betty Schowalter. In 1972, Debra graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1978 following her completion of studies in the College of Sciences and Humanities at Iowa State University.

Debra was married to Scott H. Walters on November 17, 1984, in West Des Moines, Iowa. In addition to her husband, Debra is survived by her parents, who reside in West Des Moines, Iowa, and her sister, Denise Kay Schowalter, who resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Debra was a compassionate and generous person. A great storyteller with a sense of humor and an easy-going nature, she put people at ease and formed instant friendships.

She loved life, and, when she was still able to do so, Debra enjoyed hiking, biking, swimming and long walks. She enjoyed nature and she loved all animals, large or small, especially her cat, Bruiser.

She was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994, and, following treatment, Debra lived seemingly cancer-free until October, 2002, when she was diagnosed with a recurrence. Through various forms of treatment, including hormonal therapy, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, Debra battled lung metastases, bone metastases, and finally, brain, liver and intestinal metastases.

Debra belonged to a local breast cancer support group, and she participated in Race for the Cure events and the local Relay For Life. Through her telling of her own hard-fought battle with breast cancer, Debra comforted others afflicted with the illness and sometimes gave them the courage necessary to continue the fight. Her example of living life to its fullest despite her often painful illness has inspired others without the disease to more fully appreciate their own lives.

Donald Schowalter, 84, of West Des Moines died Aug. 3, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines followed by a military graveside service at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. today at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines with a Rosary at 6 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Donald Clifford Schowalter was born Aug. 7, 1928, in Prescott.

Donald is survived by his wife Elizabeth Jean (Trenkle) Schowalter; daughter Denise Kay Schowalter of Minneapolis, Minn.; son-in-law Scott Harding Walters of Davenport and extended family in Iowa and Nebraska.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Dollie (Riggle) Schowalter and Arnold Herbert Schowalter; sister Dorothy Darlene (Schowalter) Kuhns; and daughter Debra Ann (Schowalter) Walters.
