    _____

Jean Berry, a Broward pioneer and longtime school teacher and principal, died July 9.

Mrs. Berry, who lived in a Plantation retirement center, was 92.

Mrs. Berry was the daughter of J.A. "Quill" Lloyd, Broward County's first Republican sheriff, who was elected to one term from 1957 to 1961. Lloyd Estates, an Oakland Park neighborhood where the sheriff owned farm land during World War II, is named after him. He died in 1978.

Betty Cobb, a Plantation historian, remembers the sheriff first ran for office as a Democrat and lost. "So the next time he ran as a Republican and won," she said.

    She remembers Mrs. Berry fondly.

"She was my Sunday school teacher" at the church now called First Christian Church of Fort Lauderdale, Cobb said. "And she was very pretty, which impressed a bunch of little girls."

Mrs. Berry was a lifetime member of First Christian Church, where she served not only as a Sunday school teacher, but as Sunday school superintendent, choir member, deacon and elder.

Mrs. Berry was born in Indiana on Sept. 11, 1922, and her family moved to Broward in 1926 for job opportunities. Mrs. Berry graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1939 and later earned master's degrees from Florida State University and Columbia University, according to her daughter.

Her family said she started teaching physical education at Hollywood Central School, served as Dean of Girls at McNicol Junior High School in Hollywood and became principal at Plantation Middle School. She retired in 1978.

Mrs. Berry was active with pioneer groups and even took a turn chairing the annual Pioneer Reunion Luncheon for those who lived in Fort Lauderdale before 1942.

A subject that evoked vivid memories at the reunions was the hurricane of 1926.

Mrs. Berry told the Sun Sentinel in 1988 that she was 3 years old and lived in a what was called a "camp town," where newly arrived residents settled. Peeking through her window, she saw a neighboring home explode, sending dresses flying.

Mrs. Berry's daughter, Bonnie Berry Hingson, said the families lived in tent encampments until their houses were built. "There was not a lot of development here," she said.

"She was honored to be a pioneer," Hingson said. "She got to see the development of a great town."

Hingson said her mother and four friends from FSU created an endowment fund called the "Fearless Five" to provide scholarships for physical education majors. The endowment has since been expanded to other education majors, she said.

In addition to her daughter, who lives in Granbury, Texas, Mrs. Berry is survived by one grandson and two great grandsons.

The memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Village Center at Covenant Village of Florida, 9215 W. Broward Blvd. in Plantation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Village or to the First Christian Church of Fort Lauderdale, 201 SE 13th St., Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33316.
