Research Note:
John Stoner may possibly be the John Stoner, Sone of Jerimiah Stoner shown in the 1850 Fulton Co., NY Census.
___________
Message Board text from Liz Osborn:
Thank you for responding, Darrah. I wish our family records were so clear regarding the connection. Right now, it is only a theory; I suspect that one way or the other, we're descended from Henry Stoner, father of Nicholas and John. The question is: through which son? Either one would be fine with me, I'm not stuck on a particular one.
Our evidence that points to this particular Stoner family (as opposed to any other) is rather circumstantial, but persuasive: first, John was a fifer, second, he was married in Gloversville, and third, his pension papers and census records corroborate that he was born in New York. The marriage location was a key factor in suggesting the John/Nicholas connection, because from what we can tell, he had to have met his wife Caroline Gilkison in either Michigan or Indiana. Caroline was first married to a Putman, who likewise was from Fulton County; she was widowed very young. She appears on the 1850 census, as a widow, in her parents' home in St. Joseph County, Michigan. But by October 1850, she was wed to John Stoner in Gloversville, New York (information from her Civil War widow's pension file). And by 1853, she and John had returned to the next county south from her parents: Lagrange, Indiana, where John apparently bought a significant quantity of land. It is purely an argument-strengthening bonus that our John is, like the Stoner brothers, a military musician.
I have observed that there is a great deal of confusion over just who is whose son among John and Nicholas (sons of Henry). I have attempted to carefully trace the various descendants through time using the censuses, trying to identify and eliminate "John"s as potential ancestors of mine (why oh why couldn't they have used more unusual names!).
Chances are we've been communicating with the same cousins. Here is what I have for children of Nick & John:
Nick Stoner & Anna Mason:
Mary Stoner (1783- ) (married William MILLS)
John Stoner (1789-1865) (Married Jane CUDDEBACK)
??? Stoner
Jeremiah Stoner (1874-1884) (Married Sarah ???)
Obadiah Stoner (1801- )
Catherine Stoner (1802 - )
John & Susanna Philes
Jacob Stoner (1787-1859) (married Catherine Schoolcraft, Elizabeth Reinhardt)
John Stoner (1790 - ) (married Elizabeth Linkefelter)
Henry Stoner (1796-1846) (married Susan Wainright)
Catherine Ann Stoner (?- ) (married Patrick Archibald)
??? Stoner (? - )
Considering the next generation (and keeping in mind that I'm looking for a John Stoner born between 1815 and 1830), here are all the John Stoners:
John (Nicholas, Henry) Stoner & Jane Cuddeback's son John is born in the right time period, 1825. However he is known to have married Mary Jane Mabbett, and had children Clarence and Florence during the time that my John was in the Union Army.
Jacob (John, Henry) Stoner & Elizabeth Reinhardt's son John is born in 1818; however he is known to have died in 1876.
Two Johns remain yet unproven one way or the other:
John (John, Henry) Stoner & Elizabeth Linkefelter's son John is close to the correct time period, born in 1814. As a matter of fact, this is the connection preferred by my brother, who has included this connection in his Rootsweb.com family tree. However, I have my doubts, because this John would have been about 45 when enlisting in the Army as a musician; further, the 1860 census record which is known to be of our John gives his age as 33.
Jeremiah (Nicholas, Henry) Stoner & Sarah ???'s son John was born approximately 1829. He appears in the 1850 census as a 21 year old in Jeremiah's household. In a previous census, Jeremiah lived in the neighborhood of a Putman family that apparently did move to southeastern Michigan sometime in the 1840's. This is my preferred suspect for our ancestor.
If you can shed any further light on this mess, I'd be quite interested. Thank you. | Stoner, John H. (I18236)

Robert Montgomery was born about 1717, probably in Donegal, Ireland, and moved to America about 1733. About 1740, probably in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he married Mary White. In 1746 he moved to Catawba Creek in Augusta (now Botetourt) County, Virginia, where he lived on the 654 acre tract acquired by his father from Benjamin Borden in 1746 and sold to Robert in 1751. On July 11, 1761, he and Patrick Sharkey acquired the site of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church by patent. The land, two miles east of Fincastle, was surveyed at 138 acres. On may 13, 1796 his heirs were sued by the church for title to the land. (Lincoln County, Kentucky, Order Bk. 3, p. 307. Lancaster County Pennsylvania, Wills D1, 272. Botetourte County, Virginia Order Book 1793-97, entry for May 13, 1796, Stoner pp. 352, 359.) Montgomery moved to Reed Creek in Botetourt (now Wythe) County, Virginia, and on Sept 25, 1771, he acquired 500 acres on Reed Creek for 5 shillings from his cousin, John Calhoun of Long Cane settlement, Granville County, South Carolina. He sold the tract to his sons James and William Montgomery for 100 pounds on Dec 4, 1771 and the three families continued to live on the land. On May 2, 1781, he sold William Christian the 654 acres on Catawba Creek and in 1782, Robert, William, and James Montgomery gave John Montgomery and Walter Crockett power of attorney to sell the 500 acres on Reed Creek where they lived. (Botetourt County, Va, Deed Bk. 1, pp. 302, 375, Bk 3, p. 28. Montgomery County Virginia Deeds A, p 271.) Robert Montgomery and his sons then moved to Lincoln (now Garrard) County Kentucky. On Feb 25, 1783 he entered a claim to 1,000 acres on Dix River in Lincoln County, and on March 13, 1788, he bought 200 acres on Jessamine Creek in Fayette County Kentucky from Jacob Myers for 40 pounds. He made his will on May 15, 1789, leaving his property to his wife Mary and to his children. The estate was probated on March 16, 1790. (Old Kentucky Entries and Deeds by Willard Rouse Jillson, The Standard Printing Co. Louisville 1926, p. 52. Kentucky Court of Appeals, Deeds A, 376, Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort, Kentucky. Farther west on the Cowpasture and Bullpasture were settlements well established in 1751 and 1752. James Scott, James Stinson, James Montgomery, John Scott, James France, Hugh McDovel, William Munory, Robert Montgomery, and william Gillespy wanted a road over the mountains from the lower Cowpasture to Borden's Tract. P. 131, Kegley's Virginia Frontier, F. B. Kegley, Southwest Virginia Historical Society, Roanoke, Virginia, 1938, pg 131.
In 1754 Robert Montgomery and Patrick Sharky entered a suitable tract of land on Sinking Spring Creek for the use of the Congregation, thus showing that the community was interested in its own form of worship and was willing to provide for its religious needs. This was the meeting place for the inhabitants of that whole region and the beginning of the flourishing Presbyterian congregation that succedded the Established Church at the County seat when the town of Fincastle was established. Robert Montgomery succeeded William Scott as Constable on Catawba. In 1756 he and Thomas McFarrin processioned the land in Capt. John McFarrin's Company on Catawba Creek. Robert, Earl of Leicester, son of Robert and the younger twin of brother Waleran. The twins were brought up at the court of with great care on account of the Kings's gratitude to their father. They accompanied Henry I when he interviewed Pope Calixtus at Gisors, Nov 1119 where they were famous for the extent of their learning. Both brothers were present at the deathbed of King Henry.
In the anarchy which followed King Stephen's accession, Robert engaged in private warfare with his hereditary enemy, Roger de Tosny [Toeni], whom he captured with Waleran's assistance. In 1137 the twins returned to England with King Stephen. Meanwhile, during Robert's absence in England, his possessions in Normandy were overrun until he came to terms with Roger de Tosny (Toeni). In 1139 the two brothers took a leading part in the seizing of the bishops of Salisbury and at Oxford. About this time King Stephen gave Robert the town and castle of Hereford along with other possessions. However, the Empress Maud, King Stephen's rival, had made Miles of Gloucester Earl of Hereford. After the defeat of King Stephen in 1141, Robert appears to have made a truce with the Angevin party in Normandy. In 1143 the future King Henry II, the son of The Empress Maud, restored Robert's lands to him and granted him the Stewardship of England and Normandy in order to secure Robert's (and Robert's son and heir) support for his claim to the crown. Robert was with King Henry II at the siege of Thorigny, Oct 1154, and later attended Henry's Coronation in Dec 1156. After Henry's accession, Robert continued to rise in royal favor and was made Justiciar in 1155. He acted in The King's absence from England from 1158 to 1164 as Viceroy. He was present at the Council of Clerendon, 13-28 Jan 1163/64, and was the first to attest to the "Constitutions" to which he secured the assent of Thomas a Becket. He worked to reconcile Henry II and the archbishop during their famous dispute. In 1165, Robert again acted a Viceroy when the King left England. In the spring of 1165, he went to Normandy with the King, but was back in England after Nov 1167 when he retained the Justiciarship until his death two years later. Robert married, sometime after Nov 1120, Amice, daughter of Ralph, Seigneur of Gael and Montfort in Brittany, who was the son of Ralph, Earl of Norfolk by Emma, daughter of William Fitz Osbern. With his marriage to Amice, he acquired a large part of the Fitz Osbern inheritance in Normandy and England. He died 5 Apr 1168, and was buried in Leicester Abbey. Amice survied him and is said to have entered a convent at Nuneaton. He was kinighted in 1122, and was Justiciar of England, 1155-1168. Besides their son Robert, Amice and Robert had three daughters, Isabel who married, first Simon de Liz II, Earl of Huntingdon, and second, Gervase Paynel; Hawise who married William, Earl of Gloucester; and Margaret who married Ralph de Tonsy (Toeni), sometime after 1155. Seth Blake was likely of native descent through her mother. The likely ancestor was Queen Cockacoeske (https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=136257380).
There is compelling evidence that Seth Blak was, daughter of Robert Blake and Miss Harrison; granddaughter of Thomas Harrison and "Jane Totopotomoi" (West); great-granddaughter of Totopotomoi ("Toby") West and Queen Cockacoeske; and great-great-granddaughter of William West, Lord Delaware.
_________________________________
Cautionary Note:
Some researchers show Seth Lucas Summers as the daughter of Capt. Thomas Harrison and Seth Elizabeth Short; granddaughter of Col. Burr Harrison, the Indian translator, member of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1679) and Ambassador to the Piscataway Indians (1699), and his wife Sarah Frances Burdette. Capt. Thomas Harrison and Seth "Short" did have a daughter Seth Harrison but she married John McMillion and was a second cousin of Seth Blake Lucas Summers, both their great-grandparents being Cuthbert Harrison and Susannah Burr Harrison. They were also probably cousins through Cockacoeske and Seth Short.

Such a "lease-for-lives" was a common form of long-term lease throughout the eighteenth century.

Davis, Sharon Eileen, 62, of Wilton Manors passed away at home after a courageous battle with cancer on December 25, 2008. She was born in Connecticut and moved to Wilton Manors when she was in 3rd grade. Sharon was a loving wife to her husband of over forty years, Richard "Slugger" Davis. Sharon was employed in the insurance industry for most of her adult life and held numerous certifications. Those certifications allowed her to teach others to get their insurance licenses. Sharon loved to go line dancing and dining with her best friend of over 50 years, Carroll Jacques of Wilton Manors. Sharon was also known for her quick wit and sense of humor that is going to be truly missed by all. Traveling was another of Sharon's passions, but her number one priority in life was her daughter, Kimberly and granddaughter, Brooke. There was not a month that went by that the three of them were not planning a trip somewhere. Sharon's love for them can never be measured. Sharon is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter, Kimberly (John) Leonard, Coconut Creek, FL; granddaughter, Brooke Kneer, Coconut Creek, FL; stepgranddaughters, Taylor & Katie Leonard, Tennessee; mother, Shirley Botsford, Sebring, FL; brother, Norman Botsford, Gainesville, FL; sister, Susan McIntyre, Sebring, FL; and numerous family and friends. Her father, Norman G. Botsford and her brother, Robert "Bobby" Botsford preceded Sharon in death. There will be a Celebration of Life at Richard and Sharon's family home in Wilton Manors on Sunday, December 28, 2008 from 1pm-5pm and everyone is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers please make donations in her name to www.hospicebytheseafl.org. Arrangements entrusted to Kalis-McIntee Funeral & Cremation Center, Wilton Manors. The index material comes from three different sources:
1. Sioux County Headstones Indexes done in 1979 -1981 by the NW Iowa Genealogical Society of LeMars IA. It was done by members walking each cemetery, filling out cards on each stone and then indexin g by cemetery. It has burials that have headstones and comprises most of the entries. Many burials were made where there was no marker put on or left over time. Unless otherwise listed the entries wil l have come from this index. Thanks to the NW Iowa Genealogical Society for permission to use these indexes to assemble this large index which is in alphabetical order by whole county.
2. The WPA (Work Progress Administration Project) made an index of Sioux County graves 1938-1941.(the letter 'O' is missing from this index. When a record from this index is not included in the inde x done in (1979-1981) as listed above, then an entry was made and noted with (WPA So.Co.Index).
3. Obituary Files 1980-1994 The Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society has been clipping obituaries from the local newspaper since 1979 to continue the indexing process beyond the index in Item 1 . above. The deaths from the GSCGS Obituary file of Sioux County burials (1980- 1994) were also added and noted with a (GSCGS Obit. file) after the entry. The actual card files contain many more are a obituaries from local outlying county areas.
