John Stuart was born in the city of Philadelphia, Pa. on the 6th day of October, 1808, of Scotch-Dutch parentage, his father being a native of Scotland and his mother a native of Holland, her maiden name was Alderman. When he was about 2 years of age his parents moved to Seneca Falls, N.Y., where his father had charge of a Presbyterian church as its pastor. His mother died when he was about 8 years of age, and his father when he was 16 years old.

He was installed as the first pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Seneca, NY on August 24, 1808. For some years the services were held in a school house which stood on Cayuga Street just south of the present church.

The Rev. John Stuart was ordained to the work of the Gospel ministry and installed pastor of this church by the Rev. Presbytery of Geneva in Junice at Col. Daniel Sayre's barn August 24, 1808.
