CMSgt. James A. Young died September 6, 2008, at Eielson AFB Alaska at the age of 51. Jim was born August 7, 1957 in Spencer, MA. He leaves his wife, Angela (Oldenburg) of Galena, Il; his sisters, Jeannine Bengtson of Spencer, Patricia Cloutier of Houston, TX, Charlotte Young of South Salem, NY, and Kathryn Payne of Worcester, MA. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Young and mother, Lorraine (Lacaire) Young of Spencer. He also leaves his step-mother, Marion Young and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Jim's life and reception for friends and family will be held at the Spencer Country Inn on Friday, September 19 at 7:00 P.M. Light refreshments will be served. EIELSON AFB, Alaska -- Chief Master Sergeant James A. Young, 51, of Eielson Air Force Base, passed away on Sept. 6, 2008, at Basset Army Medical Center, Fairbanks, after a long and valiant battle with cancer
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Galena, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded at by the United States Air Force, Scott Air Force Base. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, is in charge of arrangements.
He was born on Aug. 9, 1957, in Spencer, Mass., son of Arthur E. and Lorraine B. (Lacaire) Young. He was a 1975 graduate of David Prouty High School, Spencer.
Jim enlisted in the USAF in Jan. 1981. He was a 27-year veteran who specialized in aircraft armament. He was a certified munitions loader on various Air Force fighter and bomber aircraft. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of the first Gulf War and Operation Southern Watch. He was proud of his Air Force career.
Jim lived a life of service that set the example for others to follow. He retired as the 354th Fighter Wing, Wing Weapons Manager at Eielson AFB. The Air Force has lost a true chief, a great airman and a good friend. Jim was medically retired in December 2007.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time in the outdoors with his wife, Angie, and two dogs, Petey and Jack.
Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Senior Master Sergeant Angela M. (Oldenburg) Young, USAF, formerly of Galena; four sisters, Jeannine A. Bengtson, of Spencer, Patricia M. Cloutier, of Houston, Charlotte M. Young, of South Salem, N.Y., and Kathryn Payne, of Worcester, Mass., his stepmother, Marion Young, of Spencer; his father-in-law, Bill (Karon) Oldenburg, of Galena; a sister in-law, Julie (Mike) Kapparos, of Galena; and several nieces, nephews and good friends, who will dearly miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
