- Bernard was a tinsmith; he had a tin and sheet-metal shop in the garage behind their house at 2438 Couler (now named Central) Avenue in Dubuque. They moved to 2442 Couler Avenue about 1896 and sometime after that he moved his business to the shop next door to that house. They were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Dubuque.
