Victor Spohnheimer, 95, of Donnellson, passed away at 8:15 p.m. Monday, September 20, 2010, at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.
He was born April 23, 1915, to Edgar and Pauline Spohnheimer on the family farm near Donnellson.
Vic attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse before graduating from Donnellson High School. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Science from Parsons College in Fairfield and his Masters Degree in Botany from the University of Iowa. His 42-year career as a math and science teacher began at Burlington Junior High, moving on to Burlington Senior High. On June 2, 1946 he married Iola Lowenberg. The following fall he began teaching at Keokuk Senior High. His years in Keokuk also included teaching at Keokuk Junior College and night school classes for adults. In 1961 he began teaching at Central Lee High School. He retired in 1980, becoming a full time farmer until age 75. Throughout his teaching career he had also farmed on weekends and during the summers. Ever the teacher, he imparted his love and knowledge of trees and his timber to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Vic served the Zion Mennonite Church as trustee, deacon and chairman of the board.
Survivors include Iola, his wife of 64 years; two daughters Sandra (David) Petersen of Altoona, IA, and Mary Spohnheimer of Donnellson; one son John (Merry) Spohnheimer of Carrolton, TX; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces and 2 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Levi.
Friends may call from noon to 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 1, 2010, at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory in Donnellson. The family will meet with friends Saturday, October 2, 2010, at the Zion Mennonite Church in Donnellson from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010, at the Zion Mennonite Church in Donnellson with Gina Spohnheimer and Reverend Audrey Ratzlaff officiating.
Burial will be conducted at a later date.
