He was instrumental in creating a hands-on business management lab course--at the time, the only one of its kind in the United States. He maintained a personal interest in all of the 445 Economics and Business graduates. Dr. Raid taught and modeled practical business experience and service to church and community.

During his retirement, he served from 1983 to 1997 as the volunteer archivist for the acquisitions of Bluffton College, the Central District Conference of the General Conference Mennonite Church, the Mennonite Mutual Aid organizations of the United States and Canada, and Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission.

During a two-year leave of absence from Bluffton College, he was President of Freeman Junior College, Freeman, South Dakota, and served with Mennonite Central Committee in 1968 as travel coordinator for the Mennonite World Conference in Amsterdam.

Howard Raid was actively involved in church activities at First Mennonite Church, Bluffton, where he was a member. He also held the office of president of the Central District of the General Conference Mennonite Church; and for a number of years he was secretary/treasurer of the Mennonite Brotherhood Aid Association, Bluffton.

Dr. Raid was involved in the community of Bluffton where he served on the first zoning commission. He helped organize the Swiss Community Historical Society; the Et Cetera Shop; Bluffton Housing, Inc; and Community Progress Corp.
