Norman Haendler
Norman Haendler, 82, of rural Denmark died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at his home.
Born Sept. 21, 1924, in Middletown, he was the son of Otto and Christina Busse Haendler. On Oct. 19, 1946, he married Emma Catherine Heidbreder in Fort Madison. She died April 19, 1982. He married Martha Carol Yaley on Sept. 20, 1991, in St. Louis. She died Oct. 7.
Mr. Haendler was an Army veteran of World War II and fought at the Battle of the Bulge in the European theater. He was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 212 in Burlington and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was a bartender at Faeth's Cigar Store in his younger days. He enjoyed his farm, his view of the Skunk River Valley and watching deer and hummingbirds from his patio. He was proud of his German heritage and enjoyed telling stories.
Survivors include two sons, Karl Haendler of Bettendorf and Robert Haendler of Byron, Ill.; two daughters, Barbara Knox and Marie Ellison, both of Fort Madison; three stepdaughters, Carol Heglin of Lakewood, Colo., Debbie Starr of Hamilton, Ill., and Linda Sattler of Burlington; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Paul Haendler of Phoenix.
Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, with family meeting friends from 4 to 6 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Haendler will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Barr Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Jackie L. Bradford officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Madison, with military rites performed by the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established for Denmark Fire and Rescue.
