Moses - b. Feb 10, 1763, Ashfield, Mass.; res. Whitehall, N.Y. during the Rev. war & until abt 1806; betw. 1806-20, res Ft. Ann & then Granville, N.Y., for the last 3 yrs.; his pension appl. states that in the forepart of July 1777, he was res. w. his fathers family & they retreated into Mass. on news of the approach of Burgoynes's army; enl. at Montague, Mass, for 3 months, as a draft substitute in Capt. Moses Harvey's co., Col Woodbridge's regt.; the members of his regt. were instructed to proceed separately to Bennington Vt., & he joined his regt. there on the last of Aug.' or Sept. 1, 1777; he remained there under Capt. Winchester guarding prisoners (mostly the wnd. & sick) from the battle of Bennington, while the remainder of his co. went to Saratoga, & recoll. hearing the artillery at Stillwater "quite plain"; 1778, stat. at Skenesborough (Whitehall, N.Y.) during the spring, summer, & fall, guarding the frontier, in Capt Levi Stockwell's co. of 8 Months men; freq. plunderings by tories & Indians kept his co. on constant alarm; also served 3 months under Lt. Boggs at Skene's stone house, & abt. 12 wks. or more at the landing. "the militia were a part out at one time & a part at ano., relieving ea. other alternately during the season, & somtimes on alarms, which were several, all the militia were out"; Mar 1779, tories & Indians attacked Col. Skenne's house & murdered Mr. & Mrs. McCall shortly after he had been relieved from his station; served at var. other places during the yr., at Put's rock, at a little place below the Elbow, so called", & at their HQ, which was "at a place called the middle of town"; he notes that the guard would serve for 24 hrs. at their HQ, & then be relieved for ano. 24 hrs.; served ano. 4 months under Lts. Fuller, Boggs, Gould, & Lt. Daniel Stewart, these officeres alternating command as the soldiers anternated their posts; also served under Capt. Thomas Lyon, & Col. Jeremiah Burrows.
