    Pettit / Furman / Waldron

    Compiled by Lesba L. Thompson
(1745 Meredith Lane, Belleair, Clearwater, Florida 34616)

Obadiah Pettit (Will Book 6, page 55, Fauquier Co., Va.) was from Somerset Co., NJ; his mother was Jane Furman Pettit. Her will, filed under her maiden name, is in the Somerset Co., NJ records (Vol. 5 NJ, Wills, 193-4, NJ Archives). The will dated 12 Dec. 1770, proved 1773, names sons, Obadiah and Zedekiah. These brothers migrated to Culpepper Co., Va. about 1770; Obadiah sold his land there in 1776 and bought land in Fauquier Co., Va.

Francis Waldron (sometimes misspelled Walden) married 12 Oct. 1795, Fauquier Co., Va. Nancy Ann, daughter of Obadiah Pettit and his spouse, Ann H. (probably Hedges). Shortly after their marriage Nancy and Francis Waldron moved to Brooke Co., Va. (now W. Va.) with two sisters of Nancy and their families: Mary Pettit Roberts and Spouse Richard; Elizabeth Pettit McDaniels, spouse, Joseph. In 1811 Francis and Nancy Pettit Waldron moved to Jefferson County, Ohio; she died there prior to 1833 and he in October 1835, in Bloomfield, Jefferson Co., where they were buried.

The will of John H. Pettit, dated 24 July 1830, proved 28 Feb. 1831, named wife, Catey and nephew John, son of Obadiah and Nancy A. Waldron (this will probably in Bloomfield Station, Jefferson Co., Ohio, is filed in Will Book 12, page 21, Fauquier Co., Va.)

    Notes:

Marriage of Thomas Pettit & Behethelon Owen on 16 Apr 1785 is listed in the IGI in three submissions: batch 7013802, p. 97, batch 7732027, p. 68, and batch 8330802, p. 84. They all have the same date and county, but Thomas' name is spelled twice as Pettit and once as Pettet, and his bride's name is spelled variously as Bethethelon Owens, Behethelon Owens, and Bethelon Owen. The second submission is the same one that lists all the Washington Co. Ky marriages of the children listed in the 1834 will of Thomas of that county, which is how I conclude that these are the same individual. Note that the first submission is the same one that listed the marriage of Nathaniel Pettet and Rebecca Owen. (This submission also includes a marriage of Samuel Pettit and Elizabeth Bragg on 10 Dec 1783 in Fauquier Co., VA.)

Will of Thomas Pettit, recorded 7 Sep 1834 in Washington Co., Ky, lists daughters Lucy, Harriet, Jane, and Sally, and son William H. This will is indexed in the IGI, batch 7811106, p.45

Thomas married Owens, Behethelon on 16 Apr 1785 in Farquier Co., Virginia. Behethelon (daughter of Owens, Nathaniel and (Marder), Ann) was born in 1765 in Virginia; died in 1837 in Washington Co., Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Genealogies & sketches of some prominent old families, by Benj. F. Van Meter, Louisville 1901, Jno P. Morton & Co., pgs. 93-94, "Second generation was Nathaniel Pettit Sr. and his wife, Rebecca Owens. Third generation was Obedia Pettit, from near Lynchburg, Virginia, who came to Fayette County, Ky, about the beginning of the last century with his wife and family- his wife's name not known. Obedia Pettit's brother, named Zedecia, also came from Virginia and settled in Kentucky about the same time. Obedia's son, Nathaniel Sr., raised four sons, named Nathaniel Jr., Harry, John, and William. The children of Harry Pettit and his wife, Juliet G. Atchison, were: Sarah, who married Daniel Boone Bryan; Mary, who married George Headley, of Lexington, Kentucky; William, who married, first, Miss Jennie Carr, and after her death married Annette Van Meter; Nathaniel, who died in the Southern Army, a soldier, in the hospital; Florence Rebecca, who married J. F. Scott"

Genealogies & sketches of some prominent old families, by Benj. F. Van Meter, Louisville 1901, Jno P. Morton & Co., pgs. 97,
"Joseph C. Van Meter, fourth son of B. F. Van Meter and his wife, Amelia C. Lewis, was born September 1, 1870; educated at Morton & Irvine's private school in Winchester, Kentucky, and at the Kentucky State College in Lexington, Kentucky. Married Martha Pettit, of Fayette County, Kentucky, June 1, 1899, a daughter of Benjamin F. Pettit and his wife, Clara Barbee, who was a daughter of George Barbee and his wife, Ellen Poindexter, both of Fayette County, Kentucky. George Barbee's ancestor on the maternal side was John Bradford, who brought the first printing press over the Allegheny Mountains and established the first newspaper (The Gazette) ever published west of these mountains, in Lexington, Kentucky. B. F. Pettit was a son of Nathaniel Pettit, Jr., and his wife, Martha Clifford. Nathaniel Pettit, Jr., was a son of Nathaniel Pettit, Sr., and his wife, Rebecca Owens. Nathaniel, Sr., was a son of Obadiah Pettit and his wife, who came to Fayette County, Kentucky, from Virginia about the beginning of the last century."

IGI batch 7013802, p.97, lists marriage of Nathaniel Pettit and Rebecca Owen in 19 Oct 1781 in Fauquier Co., Virginia. (The same submission lists the marriage of Thomas Pettet and Bethelon Owen.)

IGI batch 8606603, p.36, submitted by Marie M. Hassell, Rt. 2, Box 680, Locust Grove, OK 74352 (913) 386-2339, in birth record of Nancy Pettit b. 10 Jan 1784 supposedly in Fayette Co., Ky, lists Nancy's parents as Nathaniel and Rebecca Pettit.

Nathaniel's name does not appear in the 1790 tax lists for Kentucky. On 19 Aug 1800, he is taxable in Fayette Co., Ky. His name appears on a list published in the Kentucky Gazette 6 Oct 1800 of addressees of letters waiting for pickup in the Lexington Post Office. The Kentucky Gazette also published a notice in the issue of 3 Oct 1809, advertising that "Nathaniel Pettit Jun. has property for sale at the house of Nathaniel Pettit dec'd, on the road from Lexington to Hickman.", and another notice on 6 Feb 1810 by Nathaniel Pettit Jr. of Fayette Co. regarding the estate settlement of Nathaniel Pettit dec'd.

Fayette Co., Ky, Will Book C, p.113, recorded on 11 Apr 1814 the estate division for Nathaniel Pettit, listing, in order, daughters Polly Pettit, Nancy Pettit, sons John Pettit, Henry Pettit, Nathaniel Pettit, and daughter Rebecca Pettit. The names are not in birth order, as 1830-1840 censuses show Nathaniel Jr. to be older than Henry, and Nancy to be older than Polly. Nancy and Polly were both married before 1809, so I am surprised they are listed by their maiden names. It could be that they are listed by first name only, and the published index I got this from added the surnames. I should check the will book myself.

According to the DAR Patriot Index, Nathaniel Pettit served as a private in Capt. Moore Fauntleroy's company of the 4th Light Dragoons.

Sylvia Welch (see notes for Obediah Pettit) lists as children of Nathaniel Pettit & Rebecca Owens: "Nathaniel Jr. married 1st Martha Clifford 2nd Rebecca H. Atchison; Harry married Juliet Atchison; William B. married Amanda B. Lamme; John; Nancy married George Berry (1808); Polly married John Berry Sept. 29, 1807; Rebecca married Henry Burgess Jan 5, 1831." But other sources which I consider better documented have William B. Pettit who married Amanda B. Lamme as a son of Nathaniel Sr.'s son John.
