The will of Israel Alger, husbandman of Bridgewater, dated 12 March
1755, presented 2 June 1755, names wife Abiel as executrix, she to
have stock and moveables. No children mentioned.
Abiel Bosworth, widow of Bridgewater, administratrix gave bond on
estate of Jonathan Bosworth of Bridgewater dec. on 1 June 1767 with
Daniel and Isaac Lathrop of Bridgewater as sureties.
Abiel Ames, adminstratrix on the estate of Jonathan Bosworth late of
Bridgewater, gave account 9 Oct. 1769.
The will of Joseph Ames of Bridgewater, yeoman, dated 1 Dec. 1788,
proved 7 June 1790, names wife Abiel to have "furniture she brought to
me at the time or our interinarri- age." The will names daughter Olive
Alger; dau. Phebe Howard; children of son Ebenezer Ames dec. namely
Ambrose, Charles, Silence, Walter, William and Ebenezer; sons Elijah
Ames and Nathaniel Ames; son Zephaniah Ames dec.; dau. Susanna
Copeland; son Joseph Ames; daus. Bethia Fobes, Sarah Williams and
Olive Alger; sons Fisk and James Ames.
The will of Abial Ames of Bridgewater, dated 10 Nov. 1802, proved 3
Oct. 1803, names son Jonathan Bosworth; sons James Ames, Fisk Ames;
dau. Olive Alger, wife of Joseph; granddaughter Tiley Alger, daughter
of Joseph to have my gold beads; daughter Sally Lothrop, wife of
Barnabas; daughter Chloe Tolman, wife of Daniel; son Fisk Ames
executor.

On 21 March 1786 Daniel Alger of Bridgewater, yeoman, and wife
Susanna, sold land to son Daniel Alger of Easton, yeoman; to son
Benjmain Alger and to son Israel Alger. On the same date he gave land
in Easton to daughters Kezia, Chloe and Martha. All deeds say James
Alger appeared on the second Tues. of April 1786 and swore that he saw
Daniel Alger, since deceased, sign the deeds.
Letters of administration of Daniel Alger of Bridge-water, yeoman, on
estate of Daniel Alger of Bridgewater, yeoman, dated 1 May 1787; widow
Susanna Alger requested Daniel Alger be appointed administrator as
eldest son, dated 28 April
1786.

"He owned a large farm in West Bridgewater, his house standing 100 rods south-west of the " Abiezer Alger House." Previous to the war of the Revolution, he held a lieutenant's commission in the local militia of Bridgewater. For some years he filled the office of selectman, and was frequently chosen moderator of the annual town meetings. He was a large, well-proportioned man, over six feet in height. He possessed a social disposition, and was fond of argument."

James Alger (James18, Israel4 Israel2, Thomas1), m. April 19, 1791, Hannah, daughter of Lieut. Joseph and Phebe (Cushman) Bassett, a direct descendant, on her father's side, from William Bassett, on her mother's from the Rev. Robert Cushman, both of whom were among the Plymouth pilgrims. She d. Jan. 16, 1845, aged 73.

James Alger owned and lived on a farm in that part of Bridgewater called Scotland, and for a number of years carried on, in partnership with Col. Salmon Fobes, an iron furnace and a store in Freetown, He was a deacon of the First Congregational Church in Bridgewater, in the ministry of Dr. Sanger, and, during his active life, influential in church and town affairs. In his latter years he was afflicted with a singular organic affection of the back, which rendered him incapable of active employment. Much of his time he then devoted to reading and reflection, making the Bible and religious books the objects of his special attention. He was a decided Unitarian, and would "speculate with considerable ability on subjects which have found able and opposite advocates in the Christian Church." He was an occasional contributor to the columns of the Christian Register. He died Nov. 2, 1844, aged 74. Children :-

Parnel Hervey

In the name of God Amen. I Parnel Hervey of New Braintree in the County of Worcester, widow, being of sound disposing mind and memory and realizing the uncertainty of life and the propriety of having my worldly affairs settled do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament. Principally and first of all I commend my soul to God who gave it, hoping for Mercy through the merits[?] of my Redeemer. My body I commend to the Earth to receive a decent Christian burial and I dispose of the property with which God has blessed me in this life in the following manner to wit;

In the first place I give and bequeath to my Daughters Martha Howland, Sally Tallman and Parnel Wetherell all my household furniture and clothing to be equally divided between them.

Secondly, I give and bequeath to my Daughters Martha Howland and Parnel Wetherell one hundred dollars to each of them; and if my daughter Sally Tallman shall not be living at the time of my demise, her share of the farmhouse as above named, as to be equally divided between my two other daughters above named.

Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my sons Charles M. Hervey, James K. Hervey, Calvin Hervey, Willard Hervey, Henry Hervey and Byram H. Hervey all the residue of my property both real and personal wherever it may be found to be equally divided between them after the above. L_____ my debts and incidental expenses are paid and a suitable piece of grave stone erected at my grave.

Finally, I hereby constitute and appoint Samuel Mixter(?) Esquire of New Braintree, Executor of my last will and testament; hereby revoking all other and former wills by me made.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty- six(?)

The instrument here to annexed(?) having been presented for probate as the last will and testament of Parnel Hervey late of New Braintree in said County, deceased and it being mad to appear that due notice has been given to all persons interested, and no objections being made to the probate of the same and it being also made evident by the death of Clarissa H. Mixter, one of the witnesses hereto, that said instrument was legally executed, and that said testatrix was at the time of the execution of the same of full age and of sound mind. I now adjudge that said instrument is proved and decree that the same be approved and allowed as the last will and testament of said deceased.
