Dubuque Telegraph Herald - November 27, 2011 EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. -- Marguerite E. "Grete" Werner, 83, of East Dubuque, died at 12:37 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at home, following a brief illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque. She was born on Sept. 5, 1928, in Slater, Iowa, daughter of Burton and Alma (Heggem) Halverson. She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa. She formerly taught at Prescott Elementary School and Audubon Elementary School in Dubuque and also was a substitute teacher for the East Dubuque Elementary School. She married Robert G. "Bob" Werner on April 29, 1950; he preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 2011. Grete and Bob celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 29, 2010.
She was a member of St. Mary's Parish, East Dubuque, the Galena Golf Club and the East Dubuque Ladies Bridge Club. Surviving are four children, Peg (fiance, Larry Heitzler) Fried, of Sherrard, Tom Werner, of Galena, Lynn (Kevin) Phillips, of Mobile, Ala., and Beth Trowbridge, of Dubuque; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don (Esther) Halverson, of Carroll, Iowa, and Paul (Ardelle) Halverson, of Omaha, Neb.; and a sister-in-law, Mary Roth, of Dubuque. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Joseph Werner.
