"The Sells family, consisting of J. W. Sells, his wife, two boys, aged about eighteen and sixteen, respectively, and a girl about 2 years old, resided on a farm about four miles northwest of Erie. On the 8th of March, 1886, in the night, Willie Sells went to a neighbors house and informed him that his folks were all being killed. Immediately the neighbor started for the house, alarming others as he went, so that
there was soon gathered a number of persons at the Sells house. A horrible scene was presented to their view. There on the floor of the main room lay the body of J. W. Sells, its throat cut and head showing blows of some blunt instrument. On the bed in the same room was the little girl, her head bruised and broken, her little hands bruised, cut and broken in an evident effort to ward off the blows of the murderer, dead. In the boys' room where the two boys slept together, on the bed, was the body of the boy, its throat cut and head bruised, dead.

Blood was everywhere. The instruments used, a butcher knife and hatchet, were found there. Blood was found on Willie's clothes and upon his wrists. He had evidently washed his hands. Upon investigation by a coroner's jury the evidence pointed conclusively to Willie as the perpetrator of the terrible crime that he was held and after-being tried at the July term, 1886, of the district court, was found guilty of the murder of J. W. Sells in the first degree. "History of Neosho and Wilson Counties" published in 1902 by L. Wallace Duncan. The gentlemen that compiled the info: was T. F. Rager of Neosho Co., and John S. Henry Harrison Sell disappeared from his home Sept. 18, 1887, leaving a family of eleven. Henry was a cooper by trade and an educated man. He and his wife Nancy (Comer) moved their family to Kansas in 1882, and lived in several places, among them being Parsons, St. Marys', St. Paul and Erie.

Henry organized a literary society. They met every Tuesday night when weather was good, people came from as far away as Erie and Parsons', to attend these meetings. Henry was considered a well to-do man and had a Farm in St. Paul. A railroad condemned some of his land and there was a bitter litigation over it. He finally gave up the fight and planned to find another farm. He left the morning of Sept. 18, 1887, with a considerable amount of money and was never heard from again by any of the family.

Henry's disappearance was a mystery that all pursued through many years; there were many rumors that accounted for his disappearance but none were ever proven.

His wife Nancy said that while they lived in Kansas near Jacob Sell, Henry Harrison disappeared. He left because he was scared over his brother's murder and would not go out of doors. One story states that later, before he died under a false name in Oklahoma,he made a confession to the murder.

OBITUARY

Barney Lafyette Sell was born 11 Feb 1851 in Schuyler Co. Ill and died 4 Dec 1913 at his home near Mt. Sterling, aged 62 years, 9 months, 23 days, and is buried at Harness Cemetery. Married 20 April 1873 to Polly Miller. He was the youngest of ten children who have all preceded him in death. He had three daughters--Mrs. Nona Greenleaf of Augustus, Ill. Mrs. Grace Harvey of Bentonsport, IA and Miss Fannie who is with her mother.

In 1893 he with his family moved from Schuyler Co. Ill to Van Buren County near Mt. Sterling, Iowa. In 1895 he united with Christian Church at Mt. Sterling. Survived by a wife, 3 daughters and 11 great grandchildren.

Prior to marriage, Fanny worked for Dr. Sherman at times, Manning Hotel (2 different times), Farmers Central Office, Sheriff Haney, and one season at Milliner Store for Phipps Sisters. Fanny attended Indian Country Creek School near Mt. Sterling, Ia., and a few months at Normal School in Bloomfield. Married at the Congregational parsonage (Manse) in Keosauqua. Witnesses were Jim and his sister, Edna Wilson.

Fanny Alice (Sell) Kennedy 1888-1974

FANNY A. KENNEDY

Mrs. Fanny Alice Kennedy, daughter of Barnabus and Polly Jane Miller Sell, was born June 12, 1888, in Schuyler Co., Ill. and departed this life Monday, December 9, 1974 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 86.

In 1892 she moved with her parents by covered wagon to Mt. Sterling, Iowa. On June 14, 1920, she married Elmer C. Kennedy who preceded her in death on December 13, 1954. Two sisters, Mrs. Nona Greenleaf and Mrs. Grace Hervey also preceded her in death.

Remaining to cherish her memory are a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

As a young lady, Mrs. Kennedy worked at the Manning Hotel and in a millinery shop in Keosauqua. She and Mr. Kennedy made their home in Keosauqua throughout their married life and she continued to live in her own home until suffering a broken hip on October 28, 1974.

As a girl she joined the Mt. Sterling Christian Church and remained true to her faith throughout her life. So long as she was able she attended the Keosauqua Christian Church and for a number of years was a Sunday School teacher.

She was a loving wife, a good friend and neighbor, thoughtful to those in need and will be remembered by her relatives and friends for her many kind deeds.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 12, 1974 at 2 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with the Rev. Dan Mast of the Christian Church officiating. Interment was in Fellows Cemetery, Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua was in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT W. HERVEY
Robert W. Hervey, son of John W. and Grace Sell Hervey, was born January 16, 1912, and departed this life Monday, August 28, 1978 at Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield at
the age of 66.

He had farmed and retired because of failing health. He was a sales representative for the National Motor Club
.
On April 10, 1936, he married Helen Krebill at Keosauqua, Iowa. She remains to cherish his memory along with their three daughters, Mrs. Jim Leuck of North Manchester, Ind. . Mrs. Jim Wiley of Keosauqua. and Mrs. Jim Clark of Forest Lake, Minn.; one son, Roger of Galena, III.; 14 grand children; five sisters, Mrs. Gladys Beggs, Keosauqua, Mrs. Elmer Mellen. Gary Summitt, Mo. Mrs. Herb Duke, Gallatin, Mo., Mrs. Guy Mumford, Keosauqua, and Mrs. Wanda Akey. Seattle, Washington, other relatives and many friends. A son, Hollis, grandson Ricky, one brother Willard. one sister, Lucille preceded him in death.

He was a long time member of the Center Chapel United Methodist Church.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a good neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 31, 1978 at 2 P. M. at the Center Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev· John Cornish officiating. Interment was in the
Center Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.

GALLATIN, Mo. — Verda Carmine Duke, 89, Gallatin, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at a St. Joseph hospital.

Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the McWilliams Family Funeral Home, Gallatin. Visitation: one hour prior to service, at the funeral home, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday. Graveside service and burial: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Douds, Iowa. Memorials: American Heart Association.

Verda was born Nov. 3, 1913, to John Willard and Grace Della (Sell) Hervey, near Bentonsport, Iowa. She attended school in the Bentonsport and Keosauqua area. Verda married Herbert V. Duke on Jan. 8, 1950, in Memphis, Mo. They lived and farmed in Corona, S.D., until Herbert’s death in 1965. In 1970, she moved to Gallatin to be close to her children.

Verda was a homemaker and worked for many years at the glove factory in Fairfield, Iowa. She was a member of the Gallatin Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Beggs, Florence Mellen, Valera Koonts; and two brothers, Willard and Robert Hervey.

Survivors: three sons, Charles Grimes, St. Joseph, John Grimes, Pueblo, Colo., Raymond Grimes, Brandon, S.D.; two daughters, Donna Cole, Gallatin, Joyce Brown, Gower; sister, Wanda Kirkland, Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

OSKALOOSA — Valera Zula Hervey Koonts, age 89, passed away Feb. 8, 2007, at Pleasant Park in Oskaloosa. Prior to the nursing home, she lived for six years with her son Kenneth and his family in Ottumwa.

Valera was born Sept. 25, 1917 at Keosauqua to John W. and Grace Della (Sell) Hervey.

She graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1935 and began her teaching career in 1936. She attended several colleges and spent most of her life as a teacher in Van Buren County. She was administrative assistant in the county Superintendent Office for several years and was secretary to the Keosauqua school superintendents. She also had been an insurance agent. She taught at the Van Buren County Care Facility and worked with refugees and other adults for eight years before retiring for good in 1984. She was a member of Keosauqua Methodist Church. She was an active member and officer of Mothers
Club, B.P.W., Delta Kappa Gamma (Alpha Chapter), several teachers organizations and ladies circles.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and teacher.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, James L. McLeland in 1966, Guy Mumford in 1979 and Retson Koonts in 1996; her parents; brothers, Willard and Robert; sisters, Gladys Beggs, Florence Mellen, Verda Duke and infant sister, Lucille.

Survivors include her children; daughter, Shirley Hicks of Council Bluffs, James H. McLeland and wife, Pat of Freeport, Ill., Vern Lee McLeland and wife, Debbie of Golden, Colo., Kenneth Paul McLeland and wife, Deb of Ottumwa and Jerry Dean McLeland and fiancee, Tammy Kummet of Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren, Tony and Molly McLeland, Curtis and Kim McLeland, Traci Lynn and Joseph Perry II, Ashley McLeland, Janna and John DeVylder, Alex McLeland, and Kersten McLeland; great-grandsons, Jordan and Jared McLeland, Nicholas McLeland, Joseph III and Emily Perry, Gustav and Elias DeVylder; sister, Wanda Akey Kirkland; nieces and nephews; relatives; and former students and friends.

Valera was always proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always there for them. She often helped those in need. She delighted in working with students of all ages. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with the family present from 3-5 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12 at the funeral chapel. Rev. ellis andrews and Rev. Bryon Wixom will
officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at Cantril, followed by luncheon at Keosauqua Methodist Church.
