    After their wedding, Bess and Anna Laura came North from Arkansas to Wilmonth, Missouri with 2 horses and 1 mule. They lead the mule for a spare.

    Along the way, Indian stragglers (they were not hostile) and former Civil War solders would buy food.

    Bess worked for his dad in a general store for about a year, then moved to Chicken Ridge, Van Buren County, Iowa. Chicken Ridge is located between Cantril and Milton, Iowa. All of the children were born there.

    Bess worked as a Carpenter.

    KAHOKA, Mo. - Veneta Merrick, 85, of Kahoka, Mo., died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, in Keokuk Area Hospital.

    She was born on Aug. 24, 1920, in Bonaparte, the daughter of Herchel and Naomi Humphrey Nichols.

    She was united in marriage to G. Eddie Merrick on Dec. 20, 1940, in Kahoka. He preceded her in death on July 25, 1989.

    She and her husband lived and farmed in the Asbury community until moving to Luray, Mo., in 1967. In 1988, they moved to Kahoka. She worked at Sheller Globe in Keokuk for 23 years until her retirement. She was a member of the Kahoka United Methodist Church and the Missouri Longriders. She was on the OATS board and was the Volunteer of the Year in 2000. she also loved volunteering at the Clark County Nursing Home. She collected angels and salt and pepper shakers and did a lot of canvas work. Above all else, she loved spending time with her family, especially the children. She was a warm and gentle person and will be missed by all who knew her.

    Survivors include: a sister, Vada Bergman and her husband, Delbert, of Burnside, Ill.; a brother, Lowell Nichols and his wife, Marie, of Luray; and several nieces and nephews, including Ronnie Busby and his wife, Karen, of Luray, Dawn Busby and her children, Shannon and Cheyann Hoenig of Kahoka, Mo., and Niki Wardlow, her husband, Jake, and her son, Blaine, of Kahoka; and other relatives.

    She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Busby and Carolene Nichols in infancy; and three brothers, Carmon, Verlin and Floyd Nichols.

    Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Kahoka United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Deborah Schmidt officiating.

    Burial will be in the Harness Cemetery, Mount Sterling.

    Visitation is after 1 p.m. Wednesday at Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, with the family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

    Memorials may be made to the Harness Cemetery or Clark County Rescue Squad.

    Lowell Nichols
    'Lowell Vernone Nichols, 86, of Luray, Mo. died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Scotland Co. Memorial Hospital.

    Born Aug. 15, 1922, in Davis County he was the son of Herschel and Naomi Humphrey Nichols. On June 9, 1945, he married Lena Marie Ayer in Keosauqua.

    Mr. Nichols farmed and drove trucks for Kahoka Cheese Co., Clark Co. Road District, Ayers Oil Co. and worked for Fruehauf. He owned and operated the DX Station in Wayland, Mo. He did maintenance work at Kahoka Senior Housing for five years. He enjoyed mowing, doing yard work, gardening and driving his team of mules and team of horses.

    Survivors include his wife; two sons, including Gilbert Nichols of St. Charles, Mo.; one daughter, Ilene Howell of Wyaconda, Mo.; Marie's brother's children whom he and Marie raised as their own, Sheila Wood of Kahoka and Herley Ayer of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

    Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

    The funeral for Mr. Nichols will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Deatrick officiating. Burial will be in Wyaconda Cemetery.

    A memorial has been established.

    Vada Darlene (Nichols) Bergman, 86, of Burnside passed away after a long battle with congestive heart failure on June 21, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. True to her cheerful nature, she flashed her big, beautiful smile as she left us.

    Vada was born on June 11, 1930, in Cantril, Iowa, the daughter of Herchel and Naomi (Humphrey) Nichols.

    Vada had three sisters, Veneta Merrick, Juanita Busby and Carlene Nichols (who died in infancy). She had four brothers, Carmon, Verlon, Lowell and Floyd.

    Vada graduated from Revere (Mo.) High School and taught rural school in Clark County, Mo. She married Delbert Bergman Dec. 25, 1947, in Kahoka, Mo. They moved to Burnside in 1948 and lived there throughout their married life.

    They had two sons, Robert LaCount (who died March 1, 1974) and Roger Lee. They had four grandchildren, Scott Robert (who died July 2, 1986), Simone Renee, Robert Lee, and Randall Paul. They recently had their hopes realized with the birth of their great-grandson, Logan Robert, born to Robert and his wife Nicole.

    A memorial service is at 10 a.m. July 9 at Thornber Cemetery in Powellton, with family receiving guests at a potluck luncheon immediately following at the Burnside Community Building.

    Vada was an advocate for cancer research after losing her son Robert to the disease. To continue that fight, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made payable to Hancock County Fights Cancer.     GALENA, Ill.--Darlene Faye Hervey, 68, 802 Shadow Bluff Drive, Galena, Ill. and Ft. Myers, Fla., died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla., after a long struggle against Pulmonary Hypertension and the underlying Scleroderma.

    She was born on June 3, 1939 at Milton, Iowa, the daughter of Orphie and Beulah Humphrey and grew up with a brother, Carl, and a sister, Louise, in Milton. She was the loving and supportive wife of Roger D. Hervey who she married on Aug. 11, 1957 in Milton.

    She graduated from Milton High School in 1957. After moving to Galena in 1971, she was an active volunteer for local organizations such as the Galena-Stauss Hospital Auxiliary including serving as their president and managing their gift shop for several years. She received the Auxiliary's "Auxi" award to recognize her many community services. She also worked with Meals on Wheels and was an active member and choir member of the Galena United Methodist Church. She enjoyed coordinating and assisting with many of the food preparation projects at the church. In recent years, Roger and Darlene have enjoyed wintering in Fort Myers, Fla.

    Survivors include her husband, Roger, born 1939 in Keosauqua, Iowa; one son, Michael, born 1958 in Keosauqua, his wife, Deborah (Green) and their daughter, Margaret, who now live on Long Island, N.Y.; one daughter, Ronda, born 1961 in Osceola, Iowa, and her husband, Paul Chapman, and their children, Alyssa, Andrew and Nicholas, who now live near Green Bay, Wis.

    Also surviving are her mother, Beulah Humphrey, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; one brother, Carl (Betty) Humphrey, Milton, Fla.; and one sister, Louise (Keith) Taylor, Mt. Pleasant.

    She was preceded in death by her father, Orphie Humphrey; and one sister, Mary Lou, who died in infancy.

    Visitation will be held from 3:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, 100 Carol-don Court, Galena. Visitation will also be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Galena United Methodist Church, 125 South Bench St., Galena.

    Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at the Galena United Methodist Church, Galena, with the Rev. Dan Schenck officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the services in Greenwood Cemetery in Galena.
