    John Morgan Dester 1926 ~ 2009

John Morgan Dester, 83, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer and diabetes. John was born on January 3, 1926, in Deer Creek, Oklahoma, to John C. and Augusta Dester. He was raised in Long Beach, California, where he first gained a passion for ships and the sea. He joined the U.S. Navy on his 17th birthday, during World War II, beginning the first of two long and rewarding careers.

He served in the Navy for 21 years, serving during the Korean War and in Viet Nam. He retired at the age of 37 as a young Commander. He received a Bachelors Degree from the University of Hawaii in 1963. Upon retiring from the Navy, John began a second career that spanned 27 years with IBM. John loved to work hard, and he was admired for his great capacity to work, as well as for his intelligence, integrity, loyalty and love of everything good in the world. He was particularly fond of great food, good music and learning, but his greatest love was his family.

John married Alice Mae McMurrin on October 5, 1949, and they were happily married for nearly 60 years at the time of his passing. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shortly after marrying Alice, and he served with enthusiasm in a wide variety of leadership, missionary, welfare, temple and family history callings for the rest of his life. He was diligent and faithful in every assignment, but perhaps he will be remembered best by the hundreds of young men who he assisted in scouting over many years. He is survived by his loving wife, Alice, his two sons John (Debbie) Dester and James (Annette) Dester, to whom their dad will be a hero forever. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Michele, Erin, Melissa, Julie, Jennifer, Amanda and James, and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 30th, 2009, at the Riverwood Ward Chapel, 303 West 3700 North, Provo, Utah. Family and friends may call from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be held at Utah Veteran's Memorial Park, Camp Williams, Bluffdale, Utah.
