"William Harvey was probably quite a young man at the settlement of the town. He was married April 2, 1639, to Joane Hucker, the second recorded marriage in Cohannet. He was admitted a freeman in 1656, but strangely his name is not on the military list of 1643. His first home lot was on the easterly corner of the present Winter Street, fronting on Dear Street, and a strip two rods wide was sold to the town for the town Way, then called Hoar's Lane, since Winter Street.

He was chosen constable in 1661, in 1662 one of the surveyors, and in 1664 a deputy to the General Court. From that time until 1690 there were but two or three years that he was not in office as a deputy or selectman, and often holding both offices the same year. No man in the town seems to have been more constantly trusted by his fellow townsmen with the responsibilities of public office.

He died in 1691, leaving a will, in which he mention his sons Thomas, Jonathan, and Joseph, a deceased son, and Nathan Thare, Jr., who was the son probably of a deceased daughter."

The Harvey Book, Oscar Jewell Harvey, 1899, pages 35-37:

THOMAS Harvey,(Thomas), born in Somersetshire, England, in 1617, came with his brother William to Dorchester, Mass., in
1636. [Sec page 26 ante.] Two years later he was settled at Cohannet, as is evidenced by the following deposition recorded in Plymouth Colony Records, Deeds, Vol. I., p.38:

"The deposition of Thomas Harvey of Cohannet yeoman aged xxj yeares or thereabout" (taken before Thomas Prince, gent., Goyr.. the eight day of Nov. in the xiiij yeare of his Maj’ Y Reigne of England 1638)."

"The said Thomas Harvey deposeth and sayth, That he this deponent having a bond or writing under the hand and scale of Walter Knight, Carpenter, whereby the said Walter Knight stood endepted in the sume of five pounds sterling unto Mr. Christopher Derby, which was paid for his passage over, for which five Pounds is to be payed unto Mr. Richard Derby here, as this deponent was reading the same (at sd Knights re-quest) in the ship as they came over, the said Walter Knight snatched the said bond or writing out of this deponents hand and immediate! tore the same an pieces."

Thomas Harvey was not one of the "first and ancient purchasers" of Cohannet (one reason for this being that he was under twenty-one years of age when the purchase was made), but between 1639 and 1642 he and thirteen others were adraitted as "proprietors of Taunton" upon the payment of twelve shillings each; by virtue of which payment, it was voted, the new proprietors - known as "12-shilling men" - had "“and shall have a right in future divisions of land."

In 1643, by order of the General Court, a list of "all the males able to beare Armes from xvj Yeares old to 60 yeares, within the seurall
Towneshipps," was made. Taunton’s list (see Plym. CoL Rec., VIII.: 195) contains fifty-four names, and the only Harvey in the list is "Thom Harvey." (His brother William was at this time living in Boston.)

Thomas was married about 1642 to Elizabeth Andrews (born in England in 1614), sister of Henry Andrews* of Taunton. Thomas Harvey died in Taunton in 1651, aged thirty-four years; and a year or two later his widow was married to Francis Street of Taunton, to whom she bore a daughter named Mary, who was living in Taunton in 1724, unmarried. Francis Street died early in 1665 (William Harvey was one of the appraisers of his estate in June, ‘65), and on the 10th of the following December the widow Elizabeth was married (3d time) to Thomas Linkon, or Lincoln, the Taunton miller, whose grist.mill (built in 1652 or ‘3) stood on the west side of Mill River, between the present Cohannet and Winthrop streets.

    * HENRY Andrews was included in the list of freemen, from Cohannet dated 7 March, 1636; was one of the purchasers of Taunton in 1637; Was one of the Seven men admitted end sworn as freemen 4 Dec., 1638; was one of the Deputies to the General Court in 1639 when the town was first organized, and also in 1643, ‘4, ‘7 and ‘9. He built the first meeting-house in Taunton, in payment for Which (in whole or in part) the town conveyed so him the “calves’ pasture” in 1647. He died at Taunton in 1653, and in his will (dated 13 March, 1653, and recorded In Plym. Col. Records) bequeathed so his sister Elizabeth Harvey, " widow * * * in Taunton * * a cow which is now in the keeping of George Macey, which my will is shall belong so her children."

    AS RECORDED IN:

MOSES B. HARVEY, deceased. The Harvey family can be traced to Thomas Harvey (son of Thomas Harvey, of Somersetshire, England), who was born in 1617. In company with his brother William, he came to Dorchester, Mass., in 1636, and two years later he was found at Cohasset, where he was one of the first purchasers. Between 1639 and 1642 he was admitted as a proprietor of Taunton, and about 1642 he married Elizabeth Andrews, who was born in England in 1614. He died in Taunton, in 1651.

John Harvey, son of Thomas, the emigrant settler, was born in Taunton, Mass., about 1647, and married in 1675. In 1686, Mr. Harvey purchased land of Isaac Willey which lay mostly within the limits of Lyme, Conn. This was in what is the present town of Salem, which was formed in 1819 out of portions of Lyme, Colchester and Montville. Mr. Harvey died in Lyme, Jan. 18, 1705, and his wife Jan. 9, 1709. Their children were: John, born in 1676, died in 1767; Thomas, born in 1678, died in 1725; Elizabeth, born in 1680, died in 1752; and Mary and Sarah, twins born in 1682, died in 1705.

The great-grandfather of Moses B. Harvey married Mrs. Lockie Harris, of Preston, Connecticut. Amos Harvey, the grandfather of Moses B. Harvey, was born in Preston, Conn., and he married Elizabeth Giddings, also a native of Preston. Their children were: (1) Amos; (2) Joseph, who remained in Preston, became a farmer and a milk dealer, married Betsey Phillips, and reared a family of seven children; (3) Paul, who was a shoemaker, married Betsey Green, and reared a family of six children, and at her death married Margaret Fitch, of Preston, moved to Stafford, had a family of six more children born to him, and died in Stafford; and (4) Rhoda, who married Richard Stroud.

Amos Harvey, father of the late Moses B. Harvey, was one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Stafford in his day. His birth occurred July 29, 1781, in Preston, Conn., his death in Stafford, Feb. 24, 1846. He married Sept. 27, 1801, Esther Benjamin, who was born March 10, 1781. Their children were: Julia A., who married William Moore, a shoemaker in Stafford, who had learned his trade with his father-in-law; Moses B., of this biography; Cynthia, the twin sister of Moses B., who married Elijah Fairman, of Stafford; Philip, an iron molder, who married Malinda Howlands, of Rome, N.Y.; Esther, who married Lemuel Ingalls, a machinist, who later managed the “Orinoca Hotel” at Stafford Springs; Mary, who married Marcus Howland, a tailor of Spencer, Mass.; Amos, a foundryman, who later in partnership with his brother Moses B., engaged in the manufacture of cotton warps (he married Lorinda Kibbe); Philena, who married Horatio Ledoyt, a native of Monson, Mass., who became a machinist of Stafford; and Park, a molder in the foundry, who married Althea Humphrey, of Tolland.

By trade Mr. Harvey was both a shoemaker and tanner, and had a large tannery on the site of the present Riverside mill, at Stafford Hollow. Not only was he a man of fine business qualifications, but he was favored with robust health, his only sickness being his last. It is pleasant to recall a man like “Squire” Harvey, genial, kind hearted and ever ready to help those who could not help themselves, but still a man of strong convictions, firm in his faith in the Democratic party, delighting in a practical joke, yet the man on whom the community could call when some trust or responsibility was to be assumed. Mr. Harvey was one of the founders of the Universalist Society in Stafford street, and performed more marriages than any other justice of the peace in his locality.

BENJAMIN FAMILY. The mother of Moses B. Harvey came from a family whose ancestry reaches far back, and whose name became widely known during the last century through the brilliant career of her talented nephew Park Benjamin, the author. The family records tell that John Benjamin came in the ship “Lion” to Boston, Mass., Sept. 16, 1632, and was made a freeman Nov. 6, of the same year; was appointed May 20, 1633, by the General Court, a constable; was a proprietor of Cambridge, removed about 1637 to Watertown, and died in 1645, leaving a widow, Abigail, and children, most of whom were born in England.

Joseph Benjamin, son of John, the settler, born about 1640, married June 10, 1661, Jemima, who was a daughter of Thomas Lambert or Lombard. Mr. Benjamin sold his estate in Cambridge in 1686 and he is spoken of at Barnstable and as having lived some time in Yarmouth. Joseph Benjamin’s name is given
among those of the early settlers of Preston, Conn., about 1690. Later he removed to New London, Conn., and died there in 1704, leaving a widow, Sarah, and children. The records tell of the inventory of the state of Joseph Benjamin taken April 27, 1704, which speaks of his widow Sarah and children; Joseph, aged thirty; John, aged twenty-one; Jemima; Sarah; Mary and Marcy.

Park Benjamin, the journalist and author, was born Aug. 13, 1809, in Demerara, British Guiana, where his father was engaged in business. Park was liberally educated, became a distinguished man, and made his home in the city of New York, where he died Sept. 12, 1864.

MOSES B. HARVEY was born Feb. 8, 1806, in Stafford, Conn., and died Jan. 22, 1874. His youth was spent in Stafford, and there his business honors were won. Mr. Harvey enjoyed only such advantages as the common schools afforded, first in Stafford, later in Colchester. At the early age of fourteen he began an active life in the tannery owned by his father, learning the business of preparing the skins which later were converted into foot-wear in his father’s store.

This business, however, did not altogether please young Moses, and he later entered a machine shop situated in the same neighborhood, operated by Harvey Waters, and remained there until he had passed through the different grades and had become proficient. The mechanical knowledge thus acquired aided him greatly in the inventions which he subsequently worked out and patented, some of these being among the most useful of their kind ever applied in woolen mills.

Mr. Harvey with Elijah Fairman soon established a general machine shop for the manufacture of woolen machinery, in Stafford Hollow. Very early in the business of this firm a disastrous fire swept away the first venture, and might easily have discouraged a less determined man than Moses Harvey. However, he overcame this obstacle, and soon another shop was built on the same site in Stafford, and here for many years he was a successful builder of the peculiar machinery used in woolen mills.

Mr. Harvey was the inventor of the flock cutter, a most valuable machine, which he soon patented; he also made many improvements on old machinery, that in some cases almost revolutionized methods of manufacture. For a time Mr. Harvey conducted the business alone, but later took Charles Holt into
partnership; they gave employment to from eight to ten hands, and did a most satisfactory business. Finally he disposed of the business to Mr. Holt.

Mr. Harvey then began the business of manufacturing cotton warps in Stafford Hollow, in connection with his machine business, Mr. Harvey giving his particular attention to the manufacturing and Mr. Holt to the machinery. For many years he was the agent for the Valley Company’s Warp mills at Stafford Hollow, which he had established. At the same time he controlled, with other partners, the Hop River Warp mills, of which he was general manager. These mills were located at Columbia, Conn., and Mr. Harvey’s partners were Joshua Lord, of Willimantic, and J.H. Bolton, of Stafford. Previous to the sale of his interests in the Valley Company’s mills, Mr. Harvey built, in 1857, the present Glyn mills. Here with J.H. Bolton and Amos Harvey he continued the manufacture of cotton warps until his death, being the agent and general manager.

Mr. Harvey was identified with many business interests aside from those mentioned. For years, from January, 1870, until his death, he was president of the Stafford National Bank, of which he was one of the original incorporators, in 1854, and one of its first directors. He was also one of the original incorporators of the Stafford Springs Savings Bank, and the first vice-president of the institution, serving in that capacity and also as director for a long period, ending only with his demise.

A staunch advocate of Jacksonian Democracy, Mr. Harvey was not ambitious for office, although at various times he served as selectman of the town, and in other capacities. At one time he was a representative from Stafford to the Legislature, was judge of probate for several years, and was appointed by the governor Railroad Commissioner.

The marriage of Mr. Harvey took place Oct. 8, 1827, to Rachel Jennings. Miss Jennings was born Oct. 29, 1807, a daughter of William and Anna (Staunton) Jennings, the former of whom was a farmer of Willington, Conn. The death of Mrs. Harvey occurred Feb. 9, 1884. The children born to this union numbered six: Ann Elizabeth, born Nov. 26, 1828, died March 1, 1831; George, born Sept. 29, 1831, died Nov. 6, 1831; Ann Elizabeth, born Nov. 27, 1833, died March 30, 1835; Frances, born Oct. 13, 1835, died April 11, 1836; Emma, born April 4, 1837, died Oct. 28, 1838; and Esther Smith, born Dec. 24, 1838, married Edwin C. Pinney, a sketch of whom appears elsewhere.

Mr. Harvey was liberal in his religious views and found the creed of the Universalist Church most in harmony with his belief. The church of that denomination in Stafford was largely indebted to him for its establishment and subsequent success, and he took a deep and abiding interest in its work and extension.

Mr. Harvey was emphatically a self-made man. Lacking many of the advantages of a younger generation, the foundation of his large success was laid in his own naïve ability. He was a man of keen and logical mind, and tenacious memory, gifted with a faculty for clear statement of principles and quick perception of results. He seemed to comprehend intuitively both the intricacies of machinery and the complexities of the human mind, and this faculty seemed to increase with his advancing years. In business transactions he saw, from the start, the end as clearly as the beginning. Mr. Harvey was called lucky. But it was rather that by his native worth and strength of character he commanded success, and he was the safe counsellor of both young and old.

    THE HARVEY BOOK

    (26) JOHN HARVEY4 (Thomas,3 Thomas,2 Thomas1). Born in Taunton about 1671. In 1700 he was a member of the "First Military Company" of Taunton, and 21 May, 1706, he was impressed as a soldier for Queen Anne's War. (See page 43 ante.) In 1712 he was married and was living in Taunton on a tract of land of twenty-six acres owned by his father.

In 1735 he was still residing in Taunton, and in that year became one of the original proprietors of "Township No. 1," in what was afterwards Westminster township, New Hampshire, and is now Westminster township, Vermont. In the year mentioned the General Court of Massachusetts granted to a number of people from Taunton, Norton and Easton in Massachusetts, and Ashford and Killingly in Connecticut, this "Township No. 1," which the grantees named New Taunton. The first permanent settlement made in what is now the State of Vermont was made under the auspices of the proprietors of New Taunton, and in that township. The first meeting of the proprietors was held 14 Jany., 1736, and nine months later the allotment of shares took place and proposals were issued for building a saw-mill and grist-mill. John Harvey's right or share was No. 27, and he "drawed 54 house Lott and 32 Intervail Lott."

After considerable money had been expended in building houses, mills and fences, and making other improvements, it was ascertained in 1741, on the re-survey of the boundary line between New Hampshire and Massachusetts that New Taunton was several miles north of the true boundary line, and the grant from Massachusetts was therefore invalid. The new settlers thereupon sold out their improvements, and in 1742 those who had gone to Vermont from Taunton returned.

John Harvey was not one of those who located in New Taunton. He remained in Taunton, where he died in the Summer of 1739. He was survived by his wife Sarah and the following children:

    56. i. PHILIP, b. about 1714.

History of New Bedford (Volume 4)
    .
    ELIPHALET WILLIAMS HERVEY, JR.

As business man, scientist, author and citizen, Mr. Hervey, during the active years of his life, was a prominent figure in New Bedford, and now walking amid the lengthened shadows is living in honored retirement in the citv of New Bedford.

Berkeley, Bristol county, Massachusetts, has been the home of his people for more than two and one-half centuries, dating from 1653, when William Harvey was proposed as a candidate for the rights of a freeman of Plymouth Company, and from 1643, when Thomas Harvey's name appeared on a list of those "able to bear arms." The surname is written both Harvey and Hervey, the ancestor of the New Bedford family represented in the twentieth century by Eliphalet W. Hervey being William Harvey, a distinguished citizen of Cohasset, which then included Taunton, Berkeley and Raynham. Both William Harvey and his brother held positions in Plymouth county and owned much land. William Harvey was a deputy to the General Court for fourteen years, selectman for twenty years, and held about every important office in the town. A mortgage made by Philip the Sachem to Constant Southworth was made over to William Harvey and John Richmond in 1672, and described land
"Four miles square down Taunton River and next unto Taunton bounds." William Harvey married, April 2, 1639, Joan Hucker, of Cohasset, and among their children was a daughter, Experience, born in 1644, who married Thomas Harvey, of Taunton, and they were the parents of William Harvey, of Berkeley, Massachusetts, who died January 7, 1745.

James Hervey, as he spelled the name, son of William and Hopestill Harvey, was born June 13, 1701, and lived in the town of Berkeley, where a tombstone in the family plot in the cemetery near Berkeley Common asserts that he died December 28, 1795, in his ninety-fifth year. James (2) Hervey, a son of James (i) and Rebecca Hervey, married Rachel Phillips, and had James (3) Hervey, who was a substantial farmer and ship builder at the Weir on Taunton river, building sailing vessels which were loaded with lumber, and both vessels and cargoes disposed of at Bristol and other ports. He married Lucinda Paull, also
born in Berkeley, and they were the parents of Dr. Eliphalet Williams Hervey. a graduate from the medical department of Brown University in 1826, and a successful practitioner in Wareham and neighboring towns. In 1827 he was a commissioned surgeon of the Fifth Regiment, First Brigade, Fifth Division, Massachusetts Militia, his commission signed by Governor Levi Lincoln. He married Dorcas Fearing, of Wareham, and among their children was a son, Eliphalet Williams (2) Hervey, who made New Bedford his home, and for half a century was closely identified with the Mechanics' Bank.

Eliphalet Williams (2) Hervey was born in the town of Berkeley, Bristol county, Massachusetts, July 27, 1834, and now resides in New Bedford, at No. 191 Hawthorne street. His father died in 1834, and Ebenezer Hervey, uncle of the boy, and a teacher in New Bedford public schools, took him to his heart and home. He passed all grades of the New Bedford public schools, finishing with high school graduation in 1849. He began business life as a bank clerk, serving the Marine Bank two years before going to the Mechanics' Bank as teller. In 1857 he was elected cashier of the Mechanics' Bank, and for a quarter of a century held that responsible post. In 1882 he resigned, but was elected a director, a position he still holds. While Mr. Hervey, as the record shows, was an able business man, holding responsible positions, he is a botanist of note and wrote a large amount of interesting matter concerning local flora. He published in i860 a catalogue of the "Plants found in New Bedford and Vicinity," arranging the flowers according to the season of their flowering. In 1890 a revised and enlarged catalogue was
published under the title "Flora of New Bedford and Shores of Buzzards Bay, with a Procession of the Flowers." For many years he was a member of the New England Botanical Club and of the "L'Academie Internationale de Geographie Botanique" of France. He contributed otherwise to the literature of botany, and is a recognized authority in his special study.

Other interests served and public service rendered by Mr. Hervey were six years' membership on the school committee, 1859-1865 ; two years as representative in the State Legislature, 1885-87 ; secretary of the old Young Men's Christian Association for many years ; member of the present Young Men's Christian Association (sustaining member) ; director of the American Tack Company ; trustee of St. Luke's Hospital (original member) ; trustee of the Five Cents Savings Bank from 1885. He is a life member of the Old Colony Historical Society, the Dartmouth Historical Society, and a member of the North Congregational Church, and for many years secretary of the New Bedford Bible Society.

Mr. Hervey married, in 1862, Emmeline K. Homer, daughter of Daniel Homer, of New Bedford. They were the parents of three children: Homer Winthrop, of further mention; Hetta M., married Pierre E. Richards ; Emma F., married Gilbert T. Thompson.

Homer Winthrop Hervey was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, February 10, 1866. He completed preparatory study at Friends' Academy, then entered Harvard University, whence he was graduated Bachelor of Arts, class of "88." He completed legal study at Harvard Law School, receiving his degree of Bachelor of Laws with the class of "91." He at once began practice at the Bristol county bar, locating in New Bedford, where he has been in the continuous practice of his profession
until the present (1917). He is a member of the County and State Bar associations, and in his profession has won high and honorable standing. His practice is satisfactory in volume, and the clientele he serves is representative of the best interests of the city.

Mr. Hervey married, August 19, 1908, Helen Lucretia Shaw, daughter of Dr. John C. and Mary H. C. Shaw, of New Bedford. Mr. and Mrs. Hervey are the parents of two children : Homer Winthrop, Jr., born September 10, 1909; Mary E., born April 30, 191 1. Mr. Hervey has his law offices on Pleasant street, opposite Masonic building, the family home being at No. 189 Maple street, corner of Tremont street. New Bedford.
