    * EVERETT PRAY HERVEY

    Born at Boston, Mass., June 2, 1871. Son of William Henry and Ellen Allison (Pray) Hervey. Prepared at Boston Latin School, Boston, Mass.

    In College, 1890-94. Degrees: A.b. 1894; Ll.b. 1897.

    Marr1ed to Alice Galbreath Hastings at New York, N. Y., Jan. 10, 1901. Ch1ldren: John Pray, born Jan. 17, 1905; Margaret Hastings, born Dec. 8, 1909.

    D1ed at Montclair, N. J., Jan. 4, 1918.

    AFTER several years of brave struggle against recurrent ill-health, Everett Hervey was taken from this life on January 4, 1918. His end came quite suddenly while he was on a visit to Arizona. He had gone there but a few days before to attend to matters of business affecting a copper-mining corporation for which he was legal adviser.

    In his passing, the Class of '94 has lost one of its most individual and interesting men. For, without being in the least erratic, and still less a poseur (a type that he thoroughly detested), he was never of the kind that follows the crowd in opinions or in conduct. He thought things out for himself. An example of this quality was his peculiar style of language; a use of words striking, original, sometimes bordering on the grotesque, but always vivid and trenchant. Had he been in political life he would undoubtedly have become famous as a phrase-maker. He could dispose of anything or anybody antagonistic or distasteful to him, from a yellow cur to an ex-president, with an epithet at once humorous and apposite.

    But the key-note of "Ev." Hervey's make-up was undoubtedly concentration; the kind of concentration that includes persistence. Whatever he did, he did wholly, with all his force. Even in little things this was apparent. Those who knew him in his earlier years at college will remember how he would play billiards; - a whole day at a time, scarcely stopping for a cup of coffee and a sandwich at Foster's by way of lunch or supper. So also when he forsook the paths of sport for more serious work; a "grind" with him became an undertaking of almost heroic proporH 1894 -14

    tions. It was this quality, coupled with mental powers of the first order, that carried him forward so far in his profession; and although the law was not his original choice (his grandfather having urged him into it against his own predilection for the study of medicine), it is undoubtedly true that he was admirably adapted in every way but a physical one to the career he followed.

    Temperamentally he was reserved, made friends slowly, and liked the old ones best; but, as is so often the case with men similarly disposed, his friendship, once obtained, was firm and unchanging. In this, as in other things, his dominant characteristics were intensity and persistence.

    He aimed straight; he struck hard; he endured long. But his force had nothing of the cold and repellent quality that some types of clever men exhibit. Although reserved toward the world at large, his sympathies were keen; his heart was kind; he was very human in his affections.

    We who knew him well will miss him much; while the Class of '94 has lost one of its number who has done it much honor by his fine performance. For his was a large success, accomplished in a difficult field, without favor from above, by sheer ability and character.

    Hervey was married in New York City in January, 1901, to Alice Galbreath Hastings; this was some two or three years after he had begun the practice of his profession there. The same year he went to live at Montclair, N. J., which remained his place of residence until his death. Mrs. Hervey, with their two children, John Prey, a boy of fourteen, and Margaret Hastings, a girl of nine, still resides there.

    At the beginning of his career in New York, Hervey was associated with the law firm of Underwood and Van Vorst. Later he joined the firm of Forbes and Haviland, which gradually evolved through the death and retirement of the older partners into Hervey and Barber, and later into the present firm of Hervey, Barber and McKee.
