DIES AT ADVANCED AGE
Luthera C. Denning (nee Hervey) was born in Indiana, July 18, 1842, and died at her home west of Appleton City, Mo., December 4, 1922, age 80 years, 3 months and 16 days.
Her childhood days were spent in the land of her birth. She was the daughter of a Methodist minister and early in life gave her heart to God and joined a Baptist church. She later joined a Christian church, living a faithful and consistent Christian life until death came.
She was married to David F. Spoor August 29, 1867, in Indiana. They moved to Iowa and there five children were born to them: Fitch A., who died in infancy; Francis E., Geo. E., Clinton A., and Willard E., who was with her during her last sickness. On August 27, 1892, she was married to J. H. Denning. They came to Missouri and settled on the place where they have since made their home. On account of the failing health of Mrs. Denning, her son Willard and wife came to live with her. The kindly service and care given by them made her last days comfortable and happy. She suffered greatly but was submissive to her Father's will.
Mrs. Denning was a well informed lady and had many friends. She was a mother to two orphan girls, Mrs. Harlan Kindig of Appleton City and Mrs. DeWitt of Tennessee. Her motherly care and council will ever be remembered.
Funeral services were conducted at her late home on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1922, by Rev. E. N. Webb, after which interment was made in Appleton City Cemetery.

CHARLES E. MOSHER
Charles E. Mosher, the owner of seven hundred and sixty acres of land in Van Buren County, his home being situated on Section 12, Jackson Township has resided in this community since 1854. In September of the previous year he came west and made purchase of three hundred and twenty acres of land in this county, to the cultivation and improvement of which he has since devoted his energies with excellent success.
Mr. Mosher was born on August 29, 1820 in Vermont, of which state his parents Alanson and Eunice Emerson Mosher were also natives. His maternal grandfather was one of the leading citizens of Windsor County Vermont; in fact he had a statewide reputation, especially in the Congregational Church, of which he was a prominent and active member. He was a contractor and builder by trade, and in connection with that carried on farming and operated a saw and gristmill. His business was an extensive one and he became a wealthy citizen. The father of our subject spent his entire life in the Green Mountain State, his death occurring in 1825. His wife survived him many years, dying at the age of seventy-five years. They were parents of four children, the youngest of whom died in infancy. Our subject is the only one of the family now living; George C. died in Vermont some years ago; and Francis T. died on September 2, 1890 of heart disease, in Rochester Vermont. He was then seventy-two years of age and was one of the most prominent and leading citizens of that community. His popularity was due to his upright life, which won him the respect of all with whom he came in contact. He filled various offices of trust in the county and his public and private career was alike above reproach. He became a well to do citizen, which leaves his family in comfortable circumstances. A wife, four children and his brother Charles were left to mourn the loss of one who had never forfeited a claim to their affection, but, had bound himself to them by closer ties of love, as the years rolled along. His memory will be cherished, by his brother who remains.
Mr. Mosher spent the days of his boyhood and youth in his native county, whence he came directly to Van Buren County Iowa. Having previously attained to mature years, he chose as a helpmate in life’s journey Miss Caroline T. Whiting, their union being celebrated in July of 1850. The lady was born November 16, 1832, and was a daughter of Stephen A. and Rebecca Morris Whiting. Seven children were born unto them, four sons and three daughters, namely: Napoleon, Charles, George, Frank and Eunice wife of George W. Gillson; Rebecca and Carrie. After a happy wedded life of thirty-six years, Mrs. Mosher passed away in 1886, dying of consumption. Mr. Mosher was married the second time to Lutherie Cutler Hervey in November 1887, and in whom he finds a most agreeable companion and helpmate.
As before stated, on his arrival in this county, Mr. Mosher purchased three hundred and twenty acres of land in Jackson Township and the following year purchased an adjoining eighty-acre tract. To this he has added from time to time as his financial resources have increased, until he is now one of the most extensive landowners of the county, his possessions aggregating seven hundred and sixty acres, the greater part of which is under a high state of cultivation and finely improved. In connection with general farming he is also engaged in stock-raising, which branch of his business has proved very profitable, he keeping from thirty to forty head of horses, from forty to fifty head of cattle, and seven hundred head of sheep of the medium breed. He is a member of the Anti Horse Thief Association, and in politics is a Republican when questions of State or national importance are brought up for settlement, but at local elections he votes for the man who he thinks will best fill the office. Mr. Mosher is an independent thinker. He arrives at conclusions unbiased by the judgment of others, but independently determines each question for himself after careful consideration. To others he allows the same privilege, and although he may differ radically on many points, those opposing him recognize his fair and upright spirit and render him respect accordingly.
Mr. Mosher, though not a soldier, was one of the most active supporters of the Union cause. He was a member of a home company known as the “True Blues,” whose object was to guard the interests of the Union at home. Mr. Mosher was the Captain of the company.

Hervey used to light a large oil lamp, put it on a table in the center of his little 16 by 20 shack, put up the shade and let the light shine out of the windows that were built in three sides of the shack. "Many a night, my wife and I took people in when they had lost their way on the road." A Concordia news article had the above information, when, at age 78, Henry returned to Concordia for Decoration Day. He had left Concordia after his wife died and was living in Iowa and Missouri with his 13 children.

Tenty-fifth Anniversary Report, 1894-1919, by Harvard University Class of 1894, Harvard College, page 209
* EVERETT PRAY HERVEY
Born at Boston, Mass., June 2, 1871. Son of William Henry and Ellen Allison (Pray) Hervey. Prepared at Boston Latin School, Boston, Mass.
In College, 1890-94. Degrees: A.b. 1894; Ll.b. 1897.
Marr1ed to Alice Galbreath Hastings at New York, N. Y., Jan. 10, 1901. Ch1ldren: John Pray, born Jan. 17, 1905; Margaret Hastings, born Dec. 8, 1909.
D1ed at Montclair, N. J., Jan. 4, 1918.
AFTER several years of brave struggle against recurrent ill-health, Everett Hervey was taken from this life on January 4, 1918. His end came quite suddenly while he was on a visit to Arizona. He had gone there but a few days before to attend to matters of business affecting a copper-mining corporation for which he was legal adviser.
In his passing, the Class of '94 has lost one of its most individual and interesting men. For, without being in the least erratic, and still less a poseur (a type that he thoroughly detested), he was never of the kind that follows the crowd in opinions or in conduct. He thought things out for himself. An example of this quality was his peculiar style of language; a use of words striking, original, sometimes bordering on the grotesque, but always vivid and trenchant. Had he been in political life he would undoubtedly have become famous as a phrase-maker. He could dispose of anything or anybody antagonistic or distasteful to him, from a yellow cur to an ex-president, with an epithet at once humorous and apposite.
But the key-note of "Ev." Hervey's make-up was undoubtedly concentration; the kind of concentration that includes persistence. Whatever he did, he did wholly, with all his force. Even in little things this was apparent. Those who knew him in his earlier years at college will remember how he would play billiards; - a whole day at a time, scarcely stopping for a cup of coffee and a sandwich at Foster's by way of lunch or supper. So also when he forsook the paths of sport for more serious work; a "grind" with him became an undertaking of almost heroic proporH 1894 -14
tions. It was this quality, coupled with mental powers of the first order, that carried him forward so far in his profession; and although the law was not his original choice (his grandfather having urged him into it against his own predilection for the study of medicine), it is undoubtedly true that he was admirably adapted in every way but a physical one to the career he followed.
Temperamentally he was reserved, made friends slowly, and liked the old ones best; but, as is so often the case with men similarly disposed, his friendship, once obtained, was firm and unchanging. In this, as in other things, his dominant characteristics were intensity and persistence.
He aimed straight; he struck hard; he endured long. But his force had nothing of the cold and repellent quality that some types of clever men exhibit. Although reserved toward the world at large, his sympathies were keen; his heart was kind; he was very human in his affections.
We who knew him well will miss him much; while the Class of '94 has lost one of its number who has done it much honor by his fine performance. For his was a large success, accomplished in a difficult field, without favor from above, by sheer ability and character.
Hervey was married in New York City in January, 1901, to Alice Galbreath Hastings; this was some two or three years after he had begun the practice of his profession there. The same year he went to live at Montclair, N. J., which remained his place of residence until his death. Mrs. Hervey, with their two children, John Prey, a boy of fourteen, and Margaret Hastings, a girl of nine, still resides there.
At the beginning of his career in New York, Hervey was associated with the law firm of Underwood and Van Vorst. Later he joined the firm of Forbes and Haviland, which gradually evolved through the death and retirement of the older partners into Hervey and Barber, and later into the present firm of Hervey, Barber and McKee.
