Commentary from Elizabeth Hervey Osborn:

Elise emigrated from Russia in 1874, as part of the mass migration of Mennonites out of Volhynia. Volhynia had formerly been part of Poland, was then part of Russia, and is now part of the Ukraine. It is a region not far from Kiev. You can read about this mass migration in "Brothers in Deed to Brothers in Need" by Clarence Herbert. The migration came about due to the new Czar's law making military service compulsory for all adult males. This requirement this was a major change from the promises made by the Empress Catherine about two or three generations earlier around the turn of the century from the 1700s to the 1800s. Due to their reputation as diligent hard-working and peaceful farmers, she invited Mennonites to settle and build up that part of Poland that Russia had recently acquired, promising in exchange that they would be exempted from military service.

Several branches of Mennonites answered Catherine's call, but the single largest (and earliest) group was from Prussia, where religious persecution (largely based in their refusal to take up arms) had become intense. These Mennonites had originated two or three generations before that in the northern European lowlands of the Netherlands and Flanders. Common surnames among this "Low Mennonite" group included Becker, Nachtigall (Nightingale), Unruh, Buller, Schmidt, Ratzlaf, Jantz, Warkentin, and Köhn. They early settled in the town of Karlswalde and (as was the pattern at the time, which is even seen in our own US Mennonite ancestry settlement patterns) branched out into daughter settlements nearby, including Antonovka.

There were some other Mennonite/Anabaptist groups which also came to Catherine's Russia, including a few Swiss Mennonites (including the surname Krehbiel) and some Hutterites. Generally speaking, prior to leaving Russia, the groups did not intermingle, because they did not speak exactly the same language (High German v. Low German) and did not exactly conform to the same religious practices (much like the differences now between Mennonites and Amish). There is some record, however, of a town or two trying the idea of living together; in particular there were was at least once where some Low Mennonites joined with some Hutterites in a common property experiment (as described in the book of Acts) but it did not last too very long.

When the changes in the compulsory service law were announced, the Mennonites had a year or two of time before it became effective. During this time, they sent men to the Western Hemisphere to investigate where they might go, and to secure promises regarding the obligation of military service. These men toured the plains of North America from Kansas to Manitoba during the Summer of 1873. When they went back and reported to their respective congregations, they all decided to go -- but some to Kansas, some to Nebraska, some to the Dakotas, and still others to Canada. As preparation for the journey across two continents began, it became apparent that not everyone had the means to make the trip... worse, land values around the Mennonite settlements plummeted as buyers knew they only had to wait until the situation under the new conscription law would become dire, leaving the land free for the taking.

Quite a few of the Low Mennonites decided to come to Kansas, to a location easily accessible by the new railroad. The land there most resembled the prairies of Volhynia that they knew; and they would bring Russian Red Winter Wheat (which would revolutionize Kansas wheat farming... (but that was in the future).

Meanwhile, back in the United States, word of the plight of these Mennonite refugees was being shared in German language newspapers and Mennonite congregations. President U.S. Grant noted that they were coming to "settle in compact colonies... desirous of civil and religious liberty" in what would have been the equivalent of his State of the Union address in January 1874. Collections were taken up to help secure land and tools for the future arrivals. The Zion Mennonite Church of Lee County Iowa contributed $20.00 toward the Russian Aid Fund in December 1874, for example. Many, but not all, of the Mennonites leaving Russia found it difficult to exchange their goods and property for cash; what they could get was spent on transportation first across Europe, then to Liverpool England, then passage on a steamship to Philadelphia, then train to the great prairies. Those with adequate funds were able get underway in early 1874, and arrived in Kansas in July. Just in time for the Grasshopper plague. (You remember that plague from Little House on Plum Creek, right? Yup. That plague).

Those without adequate funds lagged behind, including most of the folks from Antonovka. Throughout November 1874, emigrants from Russia boarded steamships in LIverpool and Hamburg, as many as could fit on each ship, some on the Nederland, some on the CIty of London, some on the CIty of Montreal, some on the Abbotsford. There were still hundreds in the port cities trying to leave as winter set in. The "Herald of Truth" newspaper noted on November 26 that 35 families of Russian Mennonites landed that day in Philadelphia, and said "Whether they are poor or have means, we are not informed, but they will undoubtedly remain in the East during the winter."

The writer was wrong. Unaccustomed to city life and American ways, and perhaps swindled by ticket sellers, railroad hawks, or just plain lacking information about options (and no way to say, call ahead and ask what arrangements could or be made), a huge percentage of the arrivals boarded trains for the west. And the ships full of Mennonites kept leaving Europe. The Steamer Vaterland arrived a Philadelphia on Christmas Day, after having experienced several delays at sea, including storms and a smallpox epidemic. The Vaterland was carrying 700 Russian Mennonites. About 450 or 500 of these had run out of provisions during the voyage. On arrival in Philadelphia, the whole group immediately left for Kansas. I believe based on matching the names of the persons on this ship with the people in the area where Elise was rescued that Elise was among the arrivals on the Vaterland.

The arrivals on the Vaterland had boarded trains for Kansas in late December 1874.... and again, if you remember your Little House on Plum Creek, was a horrible horrible winter.

By February 1875, Mennonite newspapers featured headlines "Help Needed - the Late Arrivals from Russia" and "The Great Need" and begged for relief boxes to be sent labelled "Relief Goods for the Destitute at Florence, Kansas." Various Mennonite colonies across the United States sent every spare penny, and a plan was developed to acquire land, tools, and working cattle for each family. Among those delivering goods over the following year was David Schowalter, son of Peter Schowalter and Maria Eymann. According to his brother Peter C.'s account made in 1941, when David returned from Kansas in August of 1876, he brought two girls and a little boy (Donnellson Mennonite Church Family Register, entry for Schowalter Edward Henry and Koehn Elise). The little boy did not live long in Iowa. The other little girl is not identified.

The Donnellson Mennonite Church Family Register also reports the following "After the death of her Mother, Elise came to this country when she was nine years old with an aunt and uncle, Christan and Marie Krehbiel Koehn, before coming to Donnellson." The page identifies her father as Benjamin Koehn, and that her foster parents were Peter Schowalter Sr and Maria Eymann.

What confounds this story, a little, is that on another page in the same record, we find that Peter & Maria Eymann Schowalter "fostered Elise from a Russian Mennonite family who came through Donnellson, IA."

Elise's obituary in the Christlicher Bundesbote, (27 July 1943, a transcription and rough translation at Mike's site) causes me to lean more toward Peter C. Schowalter's story: "After the death of her mother, she came in 1874 with her Uncle and Aunt to Kansas, and from there to Donnellson...." Notice here that there are no names attached to the Uncle and Aunt. What is raises questions about the names given in the Church Record is that they indicate a marriage between Low Mennonite and Swiss Mennonite groups -- not an impossibility, but considered highly unlikely. During 1874, the Swiss Mennonites largely traveled together, taking passage on the City of Richmond out of Liverpool, and arriving in New York CIty in August. There are four "Krepel" families on this ship, two have girls with them (Hanna age 8 and Marie age 9) who could match Elise; there is also a Peter Krepel and his wife Marie, but they have no children listed with them. None of these leads have panned out so far.

Sie wohnten dann etliche Jahre in Halstead, Kans., wo der Gatte in einem Kaufladen beschäftigt war und dann auch lehrte in der Indianer Missionsschule in Krehbiel-Town (auf Pred. Chr. Krehbiels Farm). Dann zogen sie zurück nach Iowa auf eine gekaufte Farm NW von Donnellson, von wo sie 1919 nach Keokuk, Iowa übersiedelten und die Heimgerufene nach längerem Leiden am 27 April, 1943 im Hospital starb. They returned to Iowa, where they bought a small farm north-west of Donnellson, from whence they moved again in 1919 to Keokuk, Iowa, which she called home until her death on 27 April 1943 in the hospital. Her husband preceded her in death on 14th of March 1939. Both Elise and Edward were members of the Zion Mennonite Church in Donnellson. Their marriage was blessed with 5 children; one died young. Remaining to mourn the passing of their mother are Clarence S. of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Harvey O. of Keokuk; Miss Mabel, of Keokuk; and Mrs. Otto Krebill, Donnellson; as well as 5 grandchildren and 4 great grand children. The funeral was held in Donnellson, and was conducted by Pred. H. E. Nunemaker. A quartet sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me." Interment took place in the Mennonite Cemetery.

*Commentary by Liz Osborn: Elisa (or the person answering) doesn't remember her mother's name. The 39 years matches the length of her citizenship, which would conceivably be a correct answer depending on how the enumerator asked her (citizenship being established on the date of her marriage to Edward). The Germany responses are puzzling until you consider that it may not have been prudent at that time to admit to being 'from' Russia.

Your Koehn ancestors came to USA on the SS Vaderland exactly 144 years ago. They arrived in Hutchinson, KS, on about the last day of the year, 1874. The Vaderland group was from the village of Antonowka in Volyn Government. The village was established by Low German Mennonites coming from the village of Jeziorka in West Prussia in 3 groups beginning in 1803. The Jeziorka villagers belonged to the Przechowka congregation near Scwiecie (Schwetz) which was the only Groningen Old Flemish congregation in West Prussia. The Vaderland group was exceptionally poor and upon arrival in USA they had no place to stay and were struck with disease- typhus I think. Many were taken in by Mennos farther east like your Elise Koehn who was sent to Iowa.

Otto had cancer, possibly resulting from trauma from his truck being rear-ended.

SCHOWALTER, ROBERT PETER "BOB" - passed away from this life on March 15th, 2012 in Knoxville, TN. Bob was born to Roy and Beulah Schowalter on June 23, 1932. He was a rare fourth generation Floridian from his mother's side. Three months short of his 80th birthday, he departed this world to be with our Lord! He was blessed to have his strength endure a full life as the Psalmist promised: "Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures...." (Psalm 90:10). His formative years were spent in South Florida... South Miami, Key West, and Homestead. He graduated from Homestead High in 1950. He matriculated to the University of Florida and received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, "With-Honors". Upon graduation he entered the US Navy and received his commission as an Ensign in the Engineer Corps. He served his country in Charleston, Japan, and Korea serving with the Navy 'SeaBees' and other engineering units. He was Honorably Discharged as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. He attended Harvard's Graduate Business School after his naval service. Bob's career as a Professional Engineer spanned work with Martin/Marietta in Orlando on military design and contracts, Bendix corporation at Cape Canaveral on altitude chambers, and TVA in Knoxville on nuclear plant design, solar system design, and HVAC system designs for schools and businesses that recycled the power for other uses. He received the 1997 ASHRAE Technology Award for his article on heat pump systems. Bob's faith journey was directed by his loving parents. He was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Key West. After marriage, he continued his faith journey in the Presbyterian denomination. He was a faithful member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in Knoxville where he attended the Speakout Sunday School class for over 30 years. Bob delighted in his grandchildren and lit up in their presence. Attending their birthday celebrations and recitals, and hearing any story about them brought him tremendous joy. Bob also enjoyed a lively political discussion, SEC college football chatter, and was an avid World War II history buff. Bob is survived by his children Mark Schowalter (Penny) of Murfreesboro, Scott Schowalter of Knoxville, Connie Glover (Chuck) of Brentwood, Amy Roadman (Steve) of Nashville, and their mother Nancy Schowalter of Knoxville. His six grandchildren: Caitlin Schowalter; Faith, Chloe, and Ella Glover; and Landon and Rilynn Roadman loved their 'Papa Bob'. His sister, Joyce Herring of Alpharetta, GA, and brother, Paul Schowalter of Hickory, NC, celebrate Bob going to be with his "heavenly family". Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 20th from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. with services to follow in the Chapel of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church with Rev. Clay Harrington officiating. Helen D. Hervey

Helen D. Hervey, daughter of Otto and Abigail Schowalter Krebill, was bom August 25, 1917 in Donnellson, Iowa and died Thursday, July 7, 1983 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 65. She graduated from Donnellson High School, attended Iowa Wesleyan College, and taught achool.

On April 11, 1936, she married Robert Hervey at Keosauqua. They farmed in the Center Chapel community south of Keosauqua.

Mr. Hervey died in 1978. Also preceding her in death were a son, Hollis, a brother, Homer Krebill and a grandson, Rickey Wiley.

Helen was a long-time active member of the Center Chapel United Methodist Church, and attended the Keosauqua United Methodist Church since moving to town. She was co-president of the Keosauqua United Methodist Women and a volunteer worker with the Happy Day Express Preschool at the Keosauqua church.

For a number of years she was coordinator of the Keosauqua Neighborhood Center, and until her last illness was employed at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center. She volunteered her talents in a variety of services to the community. She and her husband sang and played gospel, folk and popular music at many community gatherings and on a regular basis at the Good Samaritan Center prior to his death. Her contributions to the happiness of others will be remembered as a fitting memorial to her life of service.

Remaining are a son, Roger of Galena,. llL.; and three daughters, Roberta Leuck, North Manchester; Ind.; Marilyn Wiley, Keosauqua; and Sharon Clark, Forest Lake, Minn. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, one great grandson, and two brothers, Marvin Krebill, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Dwight Krebill, Donnellson, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 11, 1983 at 3 p.m. in the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with Dr. Louise Spears and Rev.Louise Knupp officiating.

Interment was in Center Chapel Cemetery. Memorials were established for the American Cancer Society and the Happy Day Express pre-school. Arrangemetns were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.

KREBILL-Marvin Krebill, aged 87 of Wyoming, died peacefully at home with his family present on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Surviving him are his wife of 63 years, Helen (nee Wiemann); 10 children, Jim (Kathy), Theda (Joseph) Huyge, Raymond (Chris), John, Tom (Laurie), Karen (Brian) Williams, Paul (Linda), Ann (Dennis) Winn, Bob (Paulette), Mary (Brad) Campbell; 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, with one ‘on the way’; his brother, Dwight of Donnellson, Iowa; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Homer and sister, Helen Hervey of Iowa. Marvin was a longtime member of St. John Vianney Parish and the Knights of Columbus 4362. He was a proud WWII Army Infantry veteran and a member of the VFW. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with family at their cottage. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am Monday at St. John Vianney Church, 4101 Clyde Park SW. Committal will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Marvin’s family will receive visitors Sunday 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming and Monday 10-11am at the church. A prayer vigil will be held Sunday at 7pm at the funeral home. A special thanks from the family to his Spectrum Health Hospice staff members. In lieu for flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to Spectrum Health Hospice or St. John Vianney Church. He is loved and will be missed.

Dwight Hubert Krebill, 86, of Sunnybrook in Fort Madison, Iowa, formerly of Donnellson, Iowa, passed away at 5:34 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 2015 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Born March 14, 1928 in Primrose, Iowa the son of Otto C. and Abigail (Schowalter) Krebill. On June 1, 1947 he married Mildred Edith Fett in Donnellson, Iowa. She preceded him in death on October 27, 2000.

Survivors include two daughters Debra Werning of Montezuma, Iowa and Carol Sturgeon of Spring, Texas, one son Craig (Susan) Krebill of Donnellson, Iowa. Nine grandchildren Kelli (Chris) Lechnir, Darin (Yan) Krebill, Theresa (Jon) Hohertz, Eric Werning, Becky (Tim) Heisdorffer, Abigail Sturgeon, Elizabeth Sturgeon, Christopher Krebill and Cassie Krebill. Eight great-grandchildren Olivia, Daniel, Kaylee, Courtney, Kara, Carter, Reese and Teagan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred, son Douglas, two sons-in-law, two brothers and one sister.

Dwight was a graduate of Donnellson High School. He was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 4-H Leader, he was a director for Southeast Iowa Access Energy and Northeast Missouri Power Access Energy. He served on the Lee County Fair Board. He was a member of the Iowa Jersey Dairy Association, Iowa Soybean Association and Farm Bureau. Dwight enjoyed bowling, playing cards (especially euchre), fishing, visiting with friends over a cup of coffee and above all else spending time with his family was his greatest love on earth.

Friends may call after 12:00 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson where the family will meet with friends from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. that evening.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2015 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Donnellson with Pastor Dean Moberg officiating. Burial will be at the Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson.

Miller crowned Lee County fair Queen; Krebill honored for 42 years of volunteer service

A new queen took the throne in the grandstand at the Lee County Fair Thursday night.

Melissa Miller, a Wever resident and 2001 graduate of Fort Madison High School, was crowned in front of a large crowd in between sessions of the Bill Riley Talent Show. Tara Wellman, the reigning Lee County Fair Queen, presented Miller with the crown.

Miller shared the honors Thursday night with the first and second runners-up, who were, respectively, Wendy Walljasper and Jessica Krogmeier. Bridget Dunlay was voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow candidates.

Before Miller was crowned queen, a member of the Lee County Fair board was honored in the grandstands; but it was not just any member. After 42 years of service to the Lee County Community, and everyone who enjoys the Lee County Fair year in and year out, Dwight Krebill was given his due this Thursday night during the Grandstand events. The Lee County Fair Board, who feels wholeheartedly indebted to Krebill for all of his services over these past 42 years, presented the board veteran with a gold watch.

Though a gold watch is certainly nothing to scoff at, the gift that the board really wanted to give to Krebill was not really a material one, but one of recognition, and a public outpouring of appreciation. When someone serves on the board of something like the Lee County Fair, the decisions and contributions that they make are enjoyed and felt by hundreds of
people, literally everyone attending the fair, in some cases.

That is what Thursday evening's ceremony was all about. Krebill has seen the Lee County Fair through the thick and the thin, along each and every step of the way, since 1958. That's no small achievement, and the board, along with the entire community as a whole, showed its thanks this Thursday night.

Brenda Mohrfeld, current member of the Lee County Fair board, sang Krebill's praises at Thursday's ceremonies. "We just can't thank Dwight enough, because not only was he always pitching in, but he was also our resident historian. We can always go to him for wisdom. We just wanted, along with the public, to acknowledge just how hard he has worked and how
selflessly he's contributed over all these years.

Recently, Krebill has taken the time to both honor his loved ones, and to help out the area, as memorials for his relatives are being used for different reasons. One, for his wife Mildred, was designated for the Art Hall. Given that, the money was used to landscape all around the building. This project is still in progress. In addition, Krebill set up a scholarship in the memory of his son, Doug, which goes to benefit area ag students.

In addition to all of the hoopla surrounding the crowning of Miller as queen and the honoring of Krebill, spectators were also presented with all sorts of amazingly fantabulous abilities, during the Bill Riley Talent Show. Acts of all sorts were presented, from tap-style dancing, to solo singing. The show was divided into two categories, one for "sprouts" or
youngsters, and a senior division. All of the acts performed were terrifitastic.
