"WILLIAM H. STRICKLAND was born December 8, 1824, on a tract of land located by his grandfather as early as 1815. The Sticklands are well known as a pioneer family of Ashland county, a sketch of whose lives will be found elsewhere in this work. William H., the subject of this sketch, when a babe, left his birthplace, his parents moving to a farm near the northeast corner of Vermillion Township, where he remained until he was a man of twenty-two years of age, when he married Mary, daughter of Jacob Eichelbarger. Mrs. Strickland died March 21, 1848. They had one child, a daughter, now wife of George Kelley, of Vermillion Township, February 19, 1850., Mr.s Strickland again married, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Hough, of Montgomery township. They had two children, one son and one daughter -- the son is at home and is single, and the daughter married David Hostetter, of Richland County, Ohio. Mrs. Strickland died June 29, 1871. April 1, 1873, he married Catherine E., daughter of Jacob Smith, of Vermillion township. The have one child, a son, now four years old. Mr. Strickland owns the farm on which he first saw the light, which he purchased about five years ago. It is a fine farm, and will, probably, be his home for the remainder of his life. He has acted as supervisor and school director a number of years; he is a good neighbor and a kind husband and father, and a hard, earnest worker. In politics, he is a Democrat, and he and his wife are members of the English Lutheran church at Jeromeville, Ohio."
