    1. [S2055] Obituary -- Betty Gene Mellen, Oltmann Funeral Home, (Location: Washington, MO; Date: October 25, 2021;).
      Obituary

Betty Gene Mellen (nee' Smith) was born May 3, 1930, in Washington, MO, to Eugene and Esther (nee' Fohlbush) Smith. Surrounded by her loving family, she passed away at her home in Washington, MO, on Sunday, October 24, 2021, at the age of 91. Betty’s children would like to thank all the family members and others who helped with her care so she could remain at home as she wished.

Betty grew up and attended grade school in Gray Summit, MO, graduating from Washington High School in 1948. After graduation, Betty continued her education at Hannibal-LaGrange College for two years and then transferred to the University of Missouri, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics in 1952. She was united in marriage to Bruce Mellen on June 21, 1952, in Biloxi, MS. The couple traveled the first few years of their marriage while Bruce served in the United States Air Force. They made their home in Gray Summit, MO, in 1955 and settled in Washington, MO, in 1964. Their marriage was blessed with five children.

Betty was primarily a homemaker and found true joy in caring for her family. She enjoyed cooking delicious meals and loved to host gatherings for family celebrations, holidays, and get-togethers for church members. Betty enjoyed reading, traveling throughout the U.S., and staying active within her church. Over the years, she led women’s mission activities, directed Bible school and daycare, and sang in the church choir. She also made weekly visits to local nursing homes and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Betty and Bruce were charter and faithful members of Faith Baptist Church in Washington, MO. Betty loved her Savior, Jesus Christ, and together, she and Bruce read through the Bible many times, a practice she continued with her dear women’s Bible study group until now.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Esther Smith; her parents-in-law, Elmer and Florence Mellen; her beloved husband of 63 years, Bruce Mellen; one brother, Robert Smith, and one son-in-law, Roger Murphy.

She is survived by five children: Greg Mellen of Washington, MO, Cathy Smith and husband Robb of New Haven, MO, Sheri Sullentrup and husband Mark of Linn, MO, Kelly Murphy of New Haven, MO, and Kirk Mellen and wife Terrica of Troy, MO; 19 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronald Smith and wife Carolyn of Washington, MO; two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Smith of Villa Ridge, MO, and Delores Strange of Liberty, MO; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 29, 2021 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM at Faith Baptist Church in Washington, MO. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:30 PM with Pastor Brett Blair officiating. Interment will follow in Midlawn Memorial Gardens in Union, MO.

Memorial donations may be made in honor of Betty Mellen to Training Pastors International or Samaritan's Purse.

The Mellen family is served by Oltmann Funeral Home in Washington, MO.
