Notes |
- The Bulkeley Genealogy, page 24:
MR. ABRAHAMl MELLOWES, born [say 1570], died in 1639,
before coming to New England invested £50 in the stock of the
Massachusetts Bay Company. He owned an interest in property
in Cambridge, Eng., which he sold shortly before 1607.* He was
admitted to the church at Charlestown, with his wife Martha and
son .Edward, 19 Aug. 1633. He received a grant of 200 acres,
Sept. 1638. He died before 4 June 1639, when his will was
mentioned in the General Court.
His wife was MARTHA BULKELEY, born about 1572, daughter
of Rev. Edward and Olive (Irby), and sister of Rev. Peter
Bulkeley. This is proved by the cumulative force of several pieces
of evidence. The will of Richard Whittingham of Sutterton, co.
Lincoln, the husband of Elizabeth Bulkeley, in 1615, named bis
father-in-law Mr. Doctor "Buckley," brother-in-law Mr. Peter
"Btlckley" and Edv,,'ard his son, and gave ten shillings apiece to
"brother Mellowes' children." There was no Mellowes relationship
on the Whittingham side, so it must have come through his
Bulkeley wife. The widow of Edward Mellowes, son of Abraham,
with her second husband, and with the consent , of "Mr. Petter
Buckley their unkelI," sold in 1652 certain real estate for the
benefit of her children by Edward :Mellowes. One of Edward
Mellowes' children, Hannah, married John Bunker, who by his will
in 1672 left their son Edward Bunker to the care of "cousin Mr.
Edward Bulkeley" [the son of Rev. Peter]. Of the children,
Edward Mellowes was obviously named after his grandfather,
Rev. Edward Bulkeley, and Oliver was probably named after his
. aunt Sarah Bulkeley's husband, Oliver St. John.
